The Paul VI High School community is heartbroken as it mourns the sudden and tragic loss of Carter Cunniff, a vibrant 17-year-old senior whose life was cut short in a devastating car accident on April 15, 2025. In the early hours of April 15, around 12:11 a.m., Carter was driving his Toyota Camry southbound on State Route 55 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the roadway and struck both a concrete overpass support and a tree. Carter was more than just a student — he was a beacon of positivity, determination, and kindness. A standout athlete, Carter’s dedication to sports mirrored his dedication to life: he gave everything his full heart. As a libero on the Paul VI High School Boys Volleyball Team, Carter made a name for himself through his sharp instincts and relentless defensive play. In the 2024–2025 season, though he only played in two matches, he recorded 22 digs—an impressive average of 11 per match—along with 1 kill and 4 service aces. His standout performance came during a 2-0 sweep over Camden Eastside, where he recorded 9 digs and 3 aces, inspiring teammates and coaches alike. Committal Service
Carter was also a dedicated member of the Paul VI Boys Soccer Team, where he spent years growing as a player and earning respect as a competitor. Beyond his athletic achievements, Carter was known for his infectious smile, his generous nature, and his unwavering support for those around him. Friends recall his sense of humor, his easygoing spirit, and his remarkable ability to make others feel valued and seen. Teachers describe Carter as a dedicated student who approached learning with curiosity and enthusiasm, always striving to better himself and those around him.
Paul VI High School released a heartfelt statement in the wake of the tragedy, saying:

Carter leaves behind a grieving but proud family who loved him beyond measure. He is survived by his parents, Mike Cunniff and Diane Zalewski Cunniff, who are shattered by the loss of their beloved son. Mike, a respected logistics director at Holt Logistics and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, has always been deeply involved in his sons’ lives. Diane, while less present on social media, has been a steadfast and loving presence in Carter’s life.
Plans are underway for a memorial to be held at Paul VI High School, where students, families, and staff will have the opportunity to celebrate Carter’s life, share memories, and find comfort in one another.
