The family of four was en route to visit friends when their SUV was overtaken by rapidly rising waters. While Leila’s husband and their 10-year-old daughter managed to escape and reach safety, Leila and Rosa were carried away by the current .​

Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, involving multiple agencies, including the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Despite challenging conditions, Leila’s body was recovered the following morning, and Rosa’s body was found later that day.​
