On the night of August 20, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred in Syracuse’s Armory Square, a bustling downtown area known for its nightlife and dining. At approximately 12:01 a.m., Syracuse Police officers patrolling the vicinity heard gunfire on the 400 block of South Clinton Street. They quickly responded and found a 25-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered medical aid until an ambulance arrived to transport the victim to Upstate University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead .
In total, five individuals were shot during the incident. The deceased was identified as 24-year-old Akok Lual. Among the injured were his brother, Lual Lual, 22; Garang Amyek, 25; Acuil Ater, 24; and Shyquan Derby, 23. One victim remained in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries .
The shooting took place near popular establishments such as Al’s Wine and Whiskey Lounge, DP Dough, and Funk ‘N Waffles. The area was crowded with patrons enjoying the weekend, and police officers were stationed nearby, approximately 30 to 40 feet from the scene. Mayor Ben Walsh condemned the act, stating, “For these individuals to willingly get into a conflict in the middle of a crowd, with police officers feet away, and decide that’s it’s a good idea to pull out a gun and start shooting… It’s crazy.
Following an investigation, 23-year-old Brandon Rolfe was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, four counts of second-degree attempted murder, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Court documents revealed that Rolfe confessed to the crime, which was also captured on surveillance footage. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 125 years in prison. A memorial for Akok Lual was established outside DP Dough in his honor .
The incident has raised concerns among local businesses and residents about safety in Armory Square. Despite a reported decline in violent crime in Syracuse, with shootings involving injuries down by approximately 40% over the past year, business owners like those at Funk ‘N Waffles have noticed a decrease in patrons during evening hours, attributing it to safety concerns .
In response, the Syracuse Police Department has maintained a visible presence in Armory Square, especially during weekends, to ensure public safety. Initiatives such as increased patrols, surveillance cameras, and community engagement programs have been implemented to address and reduce gun violence in the area .
Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the incident, expressing her commitment to working with local officials to combat gun violence and support the community’s recovery. She emphasized the importance of restoring a sense of safety and normalcy to neighborhoods affected by such tragedies .
The investigation into the shooting continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to contact the Syracuse Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the department’s website.
