Gates Police Seek Public’s Help After Early Morning Shooting Outside Tinseltown
GATES, N.Y. — Gates Police are asking for the public’s assistance as they investigate a disturbing early morning shooting that left two people injured outside the Tinseltown movie theater on Friday. The incident marks another unsettling act of violence in an area already struggling with what some residents are calling “continued nonsense” and a growing sense of unease.
According to Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode, officers responded to multiple 911 calls just after 1:00 a.m. reporting gunfire in the theater’s parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Authorities report that while their injuries are serious, they are not considered life-threatening.
“This is just continued nonsense in our area,” said Chief VanBrederode in a press briefing Friday morning. “It’s a frustrating situation because we’ve been working so hard to keep Gates safe, but a few reckless individuals can create chaos that affects the entire community.”
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with moviegoers scattering for safety as shots rang out. Several parked vehicles were also damaged in the shooting. Gates Police say preliminary evidence suggests the incident may have stemmed from an altercation between two groups that escalated into violence. However, they have not ruled out other motives, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Authorities are now turning to the community for help. They are asking anyone who was at Tinseltown during the incident — or anyone who may have seen something suspicious before or after the shooting — to come forward with information. Investigators are especially interested in any cellphone video or dashcam footage that could shed light on what exactly transpired.
“We know there were a lot of people there,” said VanBrederode. “Somebody saw something, and even the smallest piece of information could be critical to solving this case.”
The Gates Police Department has increased patrols in the area around Tinseltown and other popular gathering spots as a precautionary measure. They are also working closely with neighboring law enforcement agencies to ensure the suspects are brought to justice.
This latest incident has reignited conversations among Gates residents about public safety and the need for stronger preventive measures. Many locals say they are tired of what they perceive as a steady rise in violence and disruptive behavior, especially in areas that should feel safe for families and young people.
“I don’t know what’s going on anymore,” said Alyssa Monroe, who lives just a few miles from the theater. “Tinseltown used to be a place where you could go and just relax, but now you have to be worried about getting shot. It’s heartbreaking.”
Community leaders are calling for increased police presence, better lighting in public spaces, and more youth outreach programs to help address the root causes of violence. Several local officials have also expressed interest in working with Tinseltown’s management to improve security around the property, including possibly adding more surveillance cameras and on-site security staff.
Meanwhile, Gates Police are urging residents to remain vigilant but not to panic.
“We will get to the bottom of this,” VanBrederode said. “But it will take the entire community — law enforcement, local businesses, families — working together to make sure that incidents like this become a thing of the past, not the future.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Gates Police Department or Crime Stoppers, where tips can be submitted anonymously.
