Police in Kanyamazane Launch Investigation After Armed Robbery at Thekwane South Tavern Leaves Four Injured

Kanyamazane, Mpumalanga — Police have launched a full-scale investigation following a violent armed robbery that left four patrons injured at a popular tavern in Thekwane South, near Kanyamazane, on the evening of Thursday, April 24.

According to early reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident unfolded around 9:00 PM when a group of armed suspects stormed the establishment. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as the assailants, brandishing firearms, ordered everyone to lie on the ground before proceeding to rob customers of their valuables, including cell phones, wallets, and cash.

It is believed that during the course of the robbery, the suspects indiscriminately opened fire, resulting in four individuals sustaining gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and the injured were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have confirmed that, although the victims are seriously hurt, none of their injuries appear to be life-threatening at this stage.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga SAPS, condemned the attack, labeling it as a “brazen act of violence” and promising that no stone would be left unturned in the hunt for those responsible. “We have mobilized all available resources to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice,” Brigadier Mohlala said during a media briefing on Friday morning. He added that specialized units, including crime intelligence and tracking teams, have been activated to assist with the investigation.

Police have since cordoned off the crime scene and collected forensic evidence, including spent cartridges and CCTV footage from the tavern and surrounding businesses. Officers are also appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to come forward.

“We are asking community members to stand together against crime,” Brigadier Mohlala said. “Information can be provided anonymously via the SAPS Crime Stop line.”

The attack has left the small community of Thekwane South deeply shaken. Several residents expressed fear and outrage over the incident, noting that the tavern is usually considered a safe and popular gathering place, especially on weekends. Community leaders have called for increased police visibility in the area to prevent further violence.

Meanwhile, local authorities are working with the tavern’s management to review security measures and enhance protection for patrons and staff.

This latest robbery comes amid a broader concern over rising violent crime in parts of Mpumalanga, with several taverns and small businesses targeted by criminal gangs in recent months. Police have vowed to intensify patrols and launch targeted operations to tackle organized crime in the region.

The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information emerges.
