On the evening of April 26 2025 , 22-year-old Raejonette Morgan was fatally shot while driving her white Mercedes-Benz near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and the 105 Freeway in West Athens, Los Angeles County. As she approached a red light, another vehicle pulled alongside her and opened fire, striking her multiple times. Her car veered onto the sidewalk and came to a stop near a freeway entrance. Morgan was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries two days later.
Authorities believe the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, potentially involving gang members . Surveillance footage captured images of a “unique vehicle” sought in connection with the shooting, which continued south on Vermont Avenue after the incident. In February 2025, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible .
The incident also raised concerns about the response of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who arrived at the scene. Video footage showed the deputy remaining in his patrol car and not immediately providing aid to Morgan, despite pleas from bystanders. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that it was initially unclear whether the vehicle belonged to the suspect or the victim and that a Critical Incident Review would be conducted to assess the deputy’s response .
Morgan was a student at Los Angeles City College, studying criminal justice, with aspirations of pursuing a career in law. Her mother, Anginette Morgan, described her as full of life and passionate about her future. The family continues to seek justice and urges anyone with information to come forward.
