Jonathan Hickman, known affectionately as “Kent,” was a beloved son, brother, and friend whose life was marked by courage, faith, and an unyielding spirit. Born on April 14, 1996, in Shelby, Ohio, Kent passed away on November 30, 2018, at the age of 22, after a prolonged battle with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disease.
A Life Defined by Resilience and Love
Kent’s journey was one of resilience and grace. Despite the challenges posed by his illness, he remained a beacon of joy and inspiration to those around him. His family described him as a teacher who imparted lessons of love, patience, and unwavering faith. They expressed deep gratitude for the time they shared with him, noting that his spirit was never diminished by the disease.
Cherished Memories and Family Bonds
Kent is survived by his parents, Larry Hickman and Kari (Tim) Tarvin, and his siblings: Kayla (Lee) Klopfenstein, Krista (Ben) Carver, Kendra (Cody) Bryant, and Garrett Hickman. He also leaves behind his paternal grandfather, Jim Hickman, and maternal grandparents, Sharon (David) Bradley and Terry (Theresa) Hale, along with a great-grandmother, Viola Shepard, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kent was preceded in death by his older brother, Grant Hickman, his grandmother, Evajean Hickman, his grandfather, Larry Wheeler, and his great-grandfather, Marion Shepard.
Honoring Kent’s Legacy
A memorial service to celebrate Kent’s life was held on December 6, 2018, at Core Community Church in Shelby, Ohio. The service was officiated by Pastor Ben Carver, Kent’s brother-in-law. A graveside service followed at Oakland Cemetery on December 7, 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions to Palliative Care at Akron Children’s Hospital, acknowledging the compassionate care Kent received during his illness.

Kent’s life, though brief, left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His unwavering faith, infectious smile, and loving nature continue to inspire and uplift those who remember him. Kent’s story is a testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
