Tragedy in Clearwater Bay: Authorities Identify Individuals Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Boat Crash
Clearwater Bay, FL — Authorities have identified the individuals involved in Sunday night’s devastating hit-and-run boat crash that has shaken the local community. The operator of the recreational vehicle involved in the incident has been named as Jeffrey Knight, while the victim who tragically lost his life has been identified as Jose Castro, 41, of Palm Harbor.
The accident occurred late Sunday evening when a high-speed recreational vessel struck another boat carrying several passengers. Witnesses reported hearing a loud collision followed by screams for help. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, but despite their best efforts, one man succumbed to his injuries.
Officials confirmed Monday morning that Jose Castro was pronounced dead at the scene. Castro, a beloved member of the Palm Harbor community, was known for his dedication to his family, his work ethic, and his love for the water. Friends and neighbors described him as a kind and generous person who always made time for those around him. His untimely death has left many grieving across the greater Tampa Bay area.
The operator of the vessel responsible for the crash, Jeffrey Knight, allegedly fled the scene following the collision, prompting a widespread manhunt by local law enforcement and marine patrol units. After several hours of investigation, authorities were able to track down Knight and bring him into custody. Charges are pending as officials continue to piece together the events that led to the tragic incident.
“This is a heartbreaking situation,” Clearwater Bay Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Melissa Vaughn stated during a press conference. “Leaving the scene of an accident, especially one involving serious injury or death, is a serious crime. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served for Mr. Castro and his family.”
According to investigators, Knight may face multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and reckless operation of a vessel. Toxicology tests are currently underway to determine if alcohol or other substances were factors in the crash.
The boating community in Clearwater Bay, typically tight-knit and safety-conscious, has been left in shock by the tragedy. Local officials emphasized the importance of boating safety, particularly as the warmer months bring more traffic onto the water.
“This accident is a stark reminder of how quickly a day on the water can turn tragic,” said Captain Laura Simmons of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “We urge everyone to operate their boats responsibly, stay alert, and never leave the scene of an accident.”
A memorial for Jose Castro is being planned by friends and family members. Details will be shared with the public in the coming days for those who wish to pay their respects and support the grieving family.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a man whose life was cut far too short, while seeking accountability for the actions that led to his death.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Clearwater Bay Sheriff’s Office immediately.
