Fatal Hit and Run Charges in Bundaberg: Second Man Charged in Cyclist’s Death

A second man has been charged in relation to a tragic fatal hit and run traffic crash that occurred in Bundaberg on the evening of April 29, 2025. The incident, which resulted in the death of a 34-year-old cyclist, has sparked renewed calls for road safety awareness and responsible driving in the community.

Details of the Incident

According to Queensland Police, the incident occurred at approximately 7:50pm on Takalvan Street in the suburb of Millbank. Witnesses reported that two vehicles — a black Hyundai IX35 and a maroon Holden Calais — were allegedly travelling at high speed in close proximity to one another. During this time, the Hyundai is alleged to have struck a cyclist who was also travelling along the road.

Tragically, the 34-year-old man from Bundaberg Central died at the scene from the impact. The drivers of both vehicles reportedly failed to stop and fled the area, prompting an intensive police investigation into what quickly became a suspected hit and run.

Police Investigation and Arrests

In the days following the incident, Bundaberg police conducted a thorough investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage, conducting forensic examinations of vehicle parts left at the scene, and interviewing witnesses. Their efforts led to the identification of two persons of interest connected to the vehicles involved.

On May 5, police arrested a 22-year-old man from Avoca. He has since been formally charged with multiple serious offences, including:

  • One count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death
  • One count of dangerous operation of a vehicle
  • One count of evasion offence
  • One count of breach of bail
  • Two counts of learning to drive must be properly supervised (motor vehicle)

Authorities have confirmed that the 22-year-old man was not licensed to drive without supervision at the time of the crash, raising further questions about the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Police bail was refused for the accused, and he is scheduled to appear before the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today, May 6.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigations

The death of the cyclist has sent shockwaves through the Bundaberg community, with many residents expressing grief, anger, and concern over the increasing number of reckless driving incidents in the region. Local cycling groups have called for improved infrastructure and better driver education to help prevent future tragedies.

Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward. The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing their search for the second driver believed to have fled the scene in the Holden Calais.

The Queensland Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all individuals involved in such serious offences are brought to justice. Road safety remains a top priority, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.

Further updates will be provided as the court proceedings progress and additional information becomes available.
