Florence, S.C. – Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday morning outside a popular Florence nightclub when a mass shooting erupted, leaving one man dead and six others injured. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has officially identified the deceased as Melvin Anthony Gibson.
The deadly incident unfolded in the 3000 block of East Palmetto Street, just outside the Qulture nightclub, a location frequented by local residents seeking nightlife entertainment. According to Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye, deputies responded to reports of gunfire shortly after a disturbance escalated in the nightclub’s parking lot. The scene quickly devolved into chaos as gunshots rang out, sending clubgoers fleeing for safety.
Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation among patrons, though the exact cause of the dispute has yet to be confirmed. “A disturbance broke out among individuals in the parking area, and it escalated very quickly into violence,” said Sheriff Joye in a press briefing. “Unfortunately, Mr. Gibson lost his life as a result.”
Melvin Anthony Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. Details about the 41-year-old victim have not been publicly released beyond his identification, but family and friends have already begun to mourn his untimely passing, sharing tributes on social media that remember him as a loyal friend and loving family member.
Six additional victims were injured during the gunfire. They were transported to local hospitals with a range of injuries, but as of now, the Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed their names or the extent of their injuries, citing the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Florence community. Locals have expressed frustration and grief over the rising gun violence in the region, particularly involving late-night venues. “It’s heartbreaking,” said one resident. “People go out expecting to have a good time, not to be caught in a crossfire. This kind of violence is tearing our community apart.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has video footage to come forward. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance from the area and interviewing witnesses in hopes of identifying those responsible for the shooting.
No arrests have been made at this time, and officials have not confirmed whether more than one shooter was involved. The Sheriff’s Office has emphasized its commitment to bringing justice to the victims and their families.
Florence County Sheriff’s deputies are urging the public to remain calm but vigilant and to report any information that could assist with the investigation. “We’re going to find out who did this, and we’re going to make sure they face the full force of the law,” said Sheriff Joye.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with another act of senseless violence. A memorial for Melvin Gibson is reportedly being planned by friends and loved ones who hope to honor his life while calling for peace and justice.
