It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Simon Lund.
Simon was much more than just a member of our Brigade; he was a brother in arms, a steadfast mentor, a tireless advocate for community service, and an enduring source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His sudden and unexpected departure has left an irreplaceable void—not only within our own team, but across the entire Hyland Group and the broader CFA (Country Fire Authority) community.
Simon’s contributions to the Brigade and to the communities we serve cannot be overstated. He brought unwavering commitment to every role he undertook, whether it was on the fireground, at training sessions, during committee meetings, or in the quieter, behind-the-scenes moments where his true character shone through. His professionalism, deep knowledge, and calm under pressure set a powerful example for all of us.
But beyond his skills and leadership, it was Simon’s compassion, humility, and generosity of spirit that truly defined him. He was always the first to lend a hand, the first to check in on someone after a tough callout, and the first to celebrate the successes of others, no matter how small. His presence brought warmth and stability to every situation—a quiet strength that comforted and motivated those around him.
Simon mentored countless members over the years, many of whom credit him with shaping not only their firefighting careers but their personal growth as well. His patient guidance, thoughtful advice, and willingness to share his knowledge without ego made him a pillar of our Brigade.
His impact extended well beyond our own ranks. Through his work with the Hyland Group and the CFA more broadly, Simon built bridges between Brigades, fostered a strong sense of camaraderie, and championed collaboration and innovation. His vision and tireless advocacy helped improve not only operational effectiveness but the wellbeing of CFA members across the region.
The grief we feel in losing Simon is immeasurable, as is the gratitude we hold for having had him in our lives. In the days and weeks ahead, we will lean on one another, draw strength from our shared memories, and do our best to honor the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of service, integrity, and humanity.
To Simon’s family and loved ones, we extend our deepest condolences. Please know that you are not alone in your mourning; you are surrounded by an extended family of colleagues and friends who loved Simon dearly and who share in your sorrow.
Though words feel inadequate at times like these, we hope this tribute serves as a small reflection of the immense respect and affection we hold for Simon. He will be deeply missed, never forgotten, and forever remembered as a true embodiment of the CFA spirit.
Rest in peace, Simon. Thank you for everything.
