“Toilet Tunnel Escape: 10 Inmates Flee New Orleans Jail in Major Security Breach, Maintenance Worker Arrested

On May 16, 2025, a significant security breach occurred at the Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans, Louisiana, when ten inmates escaped through a hole behind a toilet in their cell. The escape, which went undetected for approximately seven hours, has raised serious concerns about the facility’s security protocols and staffing.

The Escape

The inmates, including individuals charged with serious offenses such as murder and armed robbery, managed to remove a sink-toilet unit from their cell. Behind it, they cut through steel bars to create an escape route. They then crawled through the hole, exited via a loading dock, and scaled a barbed wire fence to flee into a nearby neighborhood. The escape was not discovered until a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., giving the fugitives a substantial head start.

Involvement of Jail Staff

Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the facility, was arrested and charged with 10 counts of principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office. Williams admitted to turning off the water supply to the inmates’ cell, which allowed them to remove the sink-toilet unit and access the escape route. He claimed he acted under duress, stating that inmate Antoine Massey threatened to stab him if he did not comply.

Security Lapses

The escape exposed several security failures within the facility. At the time of the escape, no sheriff’s deputy was assigned to the area, and a civilian monitor had stepped away for food. Additionally, faulty cell locks and inadequate surveillance contributed to the inmates’ ability to flee undetected. Three jail employees have been suspended without pay pending further investigation.

Ongoing Investigation and Response

As of May 21, five of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while five remain at large. Law enforcement agencies are conducting a large-scale manhunt, and authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the capture of each fugitive. Sheriff Susan Hutson has taken full responsibility for the incident and has paused her reelection campaign to focus on addressing the crisis.

The incident has prompted a comprehensive review of the jail’s security measures, staffing, and infrastructure to prevent future breaches.
