The Colorado Springs community is reeling in grief and sorrow following the tragic death of 70-year-old Fred Brockway, who lost his life as a result of a hit-and-run crash on the afternoon of Saturday, May 11, 2025. The fatal incident occurred at the intersection of Michelle Court and South Murray Boulevard and has since been confirmed by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) as the city’s 12th traffic-related fatality this year.
According to authorities, the crash occurred under circumstances that remain under active investigation. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Brockway critically injured. Despite valiant efforts by first responders and medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver responsible for the incident reportedly fled the scene, prompting a citywide search for answers and justice.
Fred Brockway was a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, known by many as a warm-hearted, generous man with a deep love for his family and his community. Friends and neighbors describe him as a kind soul, always ready with a smile or a helping hand. He was a familiar face to many, especially in his neighborhood, where he was often seen walking, chatting with neighbors, or volunteering at local events and charities.
“Fred was more than just a neighbor — he was part of the heartbeat of our community,” said longtime friend and neighbor, Angela Martinez. “His death has left a hole that can’t be filled. We are heartbroken and angry that someone could do this and drive away.”
The CSPD has called on the public for any information that could lead to identifying the suspect involved in the hit-and-run. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences and have encouraged anyone with dashcam footage or who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.
“We are committed to finding the person responsible for this senseless act,” said Sgt. Michael Phillips of the CSPD Traffic Division. “Hit-and-run incidents are particularly devastating because they leave families not only mourning but also searching for answers. We ask that anyone who has even the slightest piece of information come forward — it could be what helps solve this case.”
As the investigation continues, the community has rallied together in support of the Brockway family. A memorial of flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages has formed at the intersection where the crash took place. A candlelight vigil is being planned for later this week to honor Fred’s life and legacy. Local churches, community groups, and city officials have extended their condolences and support to the grieving family.
City leaders have also renewed calls for improved traffic safety measures and public awareness regarding hit-and-run laws and the severe consequences for those who flee the scene of an accident.
Mayor Yemi Mobolade released a statement on Sunday, expressing his condolences: “Our city mourns the tragic loss of Mr. Fred Brockway, a man who represented the very best of Colorado Springs. We will not rest until justice is served. We stand with his family in this time of grief and will do all we can to support them.”
