Rochester, NY — May 23, 2025 — An early morning altercation in the northeast quadrant of Rochester has left one person hospitalized and another in police custody after an incident that unfolded near the intersection of Morton and Bay Streets. The area, typically quiet in the pre-dawn hours, was disrupted by flashing emergency lights and the sound of sirens as first responders arrived on the scene around 5:30 a.m.
According to preliminary reports from the Rochester Police Department (RPD), officers were dispatched following multiple 911 calls reporting a disturbance and possible assault in the area. Upon arrival, officers found a man in his early 30s suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds. He was immediately treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel before being transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. As of the latest update, the victim remains in stable condition but under close medical supervision.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing shouting and seeing two individuals involved in a heated exchange moments before the incident escalated. “I was walking my dog when I heard the yelling. Then it got really intense, and someone fell to the ground,” said a nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous. “Next thing I know, there were cops and an ambulance everywhere.”
RPD confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody at the scene without incident. The individual, identified only as a 28-year-old male, was reportedly still present when authorities arrived and did not resist arrest. Police have not yet released the names of either the victim or the suspect, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to notify family members.
Detectives spent the early morning canvassing the area, speaking with residents and collecting evidence. Forensic investigators were seen marking and photographing several pieces of evidence along the sidewalk and street. The section of Bay Street between Joseph Avenue and Goodman Street was temporarily closed to traffic as investigators conducted their work.
At a brief press conference later in the morning, RPD spokesperson Officer Lauren Chapman said, “This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community. We are still piecing together the circumstances that led to this confrontation, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.”
Chapman also confirmed that the incident is being treated as a potential case of aggravated assault, though charges have not yet been formally filed. The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case once investigators submit their findings.
Residents of the neighborhood, which has seen periodic issues with violence and crime in recent years, expressed both concern and resignation. “It’s sad, but we’re not really surprised anymore,” said longtime local Tonya Willis. “We just want our kids to be safe going to school and coming home.”
City officials have recently increased community policing efforts in parts of Rochester, including the area around Morton and Bay, in response to a series of violent incidents over the past year. Mayor Malik Evans, speaking later in the day at a scheduled event, reiterated his commitment to reducing street violence through both enforcement and community programs. “What happened this morning underscores the urgent need to address the root causes of violence in our city. We are working with law enforcement and neighborhood leaders to make Rochester safer for everyone.”
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has video footage from home surveillance cameras to contact the Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit or Crime Stoppers, where tips can be submitted anonymously.
