With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of 17-year-old Daniela Trejo Mendiola, who tragically lost her life on August 20, 2024, in Alamance County, North Carolina.

Daniela was struck by a vehicle while walking on Oak Grove Church Road near Garrett Road in Liberty. The driver, 38-year-old Joshua Thomas Brown, initially fled the scene but returned approximately 15 minutes later. Despite his return, Brown was not immediately detained. It wasn’t until September 4, 2024, that he voluntarily met with investigators and was subsequently arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run and cited for a window tint violation. He received a $50,000 secured bond and awaited his first court appearance in Alamance County Superior Court on September 5, 2024.

The initial lack of immediate charges against Brown sparked outrage and grief within the community. Family, friends, and supporters organized protests outside the Alamance County Courthouse, demanding justice for Daniela. Their persistent advocacy played a crucial role in bringing attention to the case and ultimately led to Brown’s arrest.

Daniela’s family has been vocal about their pursuit of justice, emphasizing the need for accountability and systemic change. They launched a petition titled “Demand Justice for Daniela Trejo Mendiola and Change in Alamance County,” which has garnered thousands of signatures.  Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support the family’s efforts, raising funds for protest materials and other necessary expenses.

The community’s response has been one of solidarity and support. Former North Carolina House Representative Ricky Hurtado expressed his condolences and commitment to assisting the family in their quest for justice. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Liberty Police Department and the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, also extended their sympathies to Daniela’s loved ones.

Daniela’s funeral services were held on August 26, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Graham, North Carolina, following a visitation at Blackwell Funeral Home in Burlington.  Her passing has left an indelible mark on the community, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of justice and the impact of collective action.

As the legal proceedings continue, Daniela’s family and supporters remain steadfast in their commitment to ensuring that her life is honored and that meaningful changes are implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
