CABELL COUNTY, WV — A tragic accident on Interstate 64 Eastbound in Cabell County, West Virginia has claimed the life of a young Kentucky man and left two others hospitalized, following a devastating chain of events on the morning of Saturday, May 25, 2025.
According to the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal crash unfolded in a construction zone where a lack of a road shoulder left drivers dangerously exposed. The incident began when a vehicle experienced a flat tire in the eastbound lanes. Due to ongoing construction and no available shoulder, the driver had no choice but to stop directly in a live traffic lane, creating an immediate hazard.
While attempting to manage the situation, the vehicle was struck from behind by another eastbound car, causing a violent collision. The force of the crash proved fatal for 20-year-old Stephen Green of Ashland, Kentucky, who was identified as the driver of the disabled vehicle. Stephen was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a deep sense of loss for his loved ones and the surrounding community.
Two additional individuals involved in the crash were transported to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated for injuries. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed, and authorities have not released their identities at this time.
Cabell County Sheriff Doug Adams confirmed that the construction zone’s lack of a shoulder significantly contributed to the dangerous circumstances. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a roadside emergency can turn fatal when proper safety infrastructure isn’t in place,” Sheriff Adams said. “Our hearts are with the families affected by this tragedy.”
The incident has prompted renewed conversations around highway safety, particularly in active construction zones where the absence of emergency pull-off areas can turn minor vehicle issues into deadly encounters. Local transportation authorities are expected to review safety protocols and potentially reevaluate construction zone guidelines in light of the crash.
Stephen Green, remembered by friends and family as a bright, kind-hearted young man with a promising future, leaves behind a grieving circle of loved ones in his hometown of Ashland, Kentucky. Friends have taken to social media to share their heartbreak, posting messages of remembrance and support under the hashtag #JusticeForStephenGreen.
“He was only 20. He had so many dreams, so much ahead of him,” one friend wrote. “He didn’t deserve this. None of them did.”
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and authorities have asked any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage to contact the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department.
As the community mourns, a memorial is expected to be planned for Stephen Green in Ashland, where family and friends can gather to honor a life cut tragically short. In the midst of grief, many hope that Stephen’s story will spark change—ensuring that no one else has to suffer a similar fate on roads meant to connect, not divide.
Rest in peace, Stephen Green. Your light was taken too soon, but your memory will endure.
