WATERBURY, Conn. – A routine afternoon at the Brass Mill Center turned into a scene of panic and chaos on Tuesday after a shooting incident left multiple individuals injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response and sending shockwaves through the Waterbury community.
According to Waterbury Police, the shooting occurred inside the shopping mall sometime in the early afternoon, as shoppers and employees went about their day. Authorities responded swiftly to reports of gunfire, locking down the mall and deploying a heavy police presence including tactical units, EMS personnel, and fire crews.
Multiple individuals were reported injured, though the exact number and severity of their injuries have not been officially released. Victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, and police said some of those hurt may have sustained gunshot wounds while others were injured in the ensuing panic as people rushed to flee the scene.
Law enforcement officials described the situation as “active and evolving,” and the mall was immediately evacuated and secured as investigators began piecing together the events that led to the violence. As of Tuesday evening, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested, though police said they are pursuing multiple leads and reviewing security footage from the mall and surrounding businesses.
“We know that people are scared and looking for answers,” said Chief Fernando Spagnolo of the Waterbury Police Department during a press briefing. “This is a serious and deeply troubling incident. We are dedicating all available resources to identifying those responsible and ensuring the safety of our community.”
Witnesses described scenes of terror inside the mall, with families and young people diving behind counters, hiding in backrooms, and sprinting for exits as the sound of gunfire echoed through the shopping center.
“I was at the food court when I heard the shots,” said one mall employee. “It was just chaos. People were screaming, running, knocking over tables—it felt like a nightmare. I still can’t believe it happened.”
Others reported sheltering in place for several minutes while police cleared the building and helped evacuate those still inside.
The Brass Mill Center, one of the city’s major commercial hubs, is often busy during weekday afternoons, especially as summer approaches. The fact that a shooting could erupt in such a public space during daytime hours has left residents shaken and concerned about rising violence.
Waterbury Mayor Neil O’Leary also spoke out following the incident, offering support to victims and their families while condemning the violence.
“We will not tolerate this kind of violence in our city,” Mayor O’Leary said. “This is a place where families shop, where kids hang out after school. What happened today is unacceptable, and we will do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
As the investigation continues, local leaders are also calling for renewed discussions on gun violence prevention, public safety, and support for trauma services. Community organizations have begun mobilizing to offer counseling and crisis support to those affected by the shooting.
Authorities are asking anyone who was in the mall at the time of the incident or who may have video footage or information to contact the Waterbury Police Department or leave anonymous tips via Crimestoppers.
The Brass Mill Center is expected to remain closed for at least 24 hours as investigators process the scene and ensure the building is safe for reentry.
