Tragedy on I-95: Florida Mother of Three Killed After Tire Flies Off Truck in Memorial Day Crash

FLORIDA — What should have been a day of family togetherness on Memorial Day ended in unimaginable heartbreak for the Maggs family. Olivia Maggs, a 32-year-old mother of three, tragically lost her life Monday after a freak accident on Interstate 95 in Florida. According to authorities, a truck’s tire blew out and detached, violently slamming into Maggs’ vehicle while she was driving with her children. Though her kids miraculously survived the crash, Olivia did not.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed that the fatal incident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-95 during the afternoon hours, as traffic was moderate with many families traveling for the holiday. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a large tire suddenly dislodge from a commercial truck traveling in the opposite direction. The tire bounced over the highway median and struck Maggs’ SUV with tremendous force, crushing part of the vehicle and causing extensive damage.

A Devastating Loss

Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes. Olivia Maggs was found in critical condition and was airlifted to a nearby trauma center. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Her three young children, who were traveling in the backseat, sustained minor injuries and were treated at the hospital before being released into the care of family members.

Maggs’ husband, Daniel Maggs, who was not in the vehicle at the time, shared his heartbreak in a public statement released Tuesday.

“My wife Olivia was everything to us,” he said. “She was a beautiful mother — so full of love, so full of life. She made our house a home, and she was the center of our world. I don’t know how we move forward, but we will because of her strength.”

Daniel described Olivia as a devoted mother who loved nothing more than spending time with their children — whether it was beach days, bedtime stories, or spontaneous dance parties in the kitchen. “She had a laugh that made you feel safe and a heart that never stopped giving,” he added. “She made everyone around her better.”

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are still investigating the crash, but initial reports indicate that the tire blowout was a result of mechanical failure. FHP troopers are examining the truck involved to determine whether negligence or poor maintenance played a role. The identity of the truck driver and the trucking company has not yet been publicly released, but officials confirmed the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

An FHP spokesperson said, “This was a tragic and highly unusual accident. We are thoroughly investigating the mechanical integrity of the truck, including tire maintenance logs and recent inspections, to determine what exactly went wrong.”

Traffic safety experts say while tire blowouts are not uncommon, it’s rare for a tire to become a deadly projectile in such a catastrophic manner. However, high speeds on interstates combined with heavy commercial vehicle weight can turn even a single malfunction into a deadly chain of events.

Community Mourning and Support

The sudden death of Olivia Maggs has rocked her community. Friends, neighbors, and strangers alike have rallied around the family, offering meals, donations, and childcare. A GoFundMe page established to support the Maggs children and help cover funeral expenses raised tens of thousands of dollars within 24 hours.

“Olivia was a light,” said a close friend of the family, Megan Lyle. “She was the person who would show up on your doorstep with coffee when you were having a rough day. She loved with her whole heart, and she loved being a mom more than anything.”

Vigils are being planned in the family’s hometown to honor Olivia’s life and legacy. Local leaders and clergy have expressed their condolences, calling for increased scrutiny of commercial vehicle safety in the wake of the tragedy.

A Call for Accountability

While the Maggs family grieves, many are calling for stricter regulations on commercial truck safety and maintenance. Road safety advocates say this devastating incident highlights the potential dangers of lax oversight and the need for routine inspections to be taken more seriously.

“Families should never have to worry about a truck’s tire flying off and killing a loved one,” said Kate Durbin, director of a national highway safety nonprofit. “This wasn’t just a tragic accident — it may have been preventable.”

As the investigation continues, the Maggs family is left clinging to memories and seeking solace in each other.

“Olivia gave our children the best of everything — her time, her joy, her love,” Daniel said. “Now, we’ll carry that love forward in her name.”
