PHILADELPHIA, PA – May 28, 2025A terrifying scene unfolded Tuesday evening outside the Courtyard by Marriott hotel on City Avenue near Presidential Boulevard, as a barrage of gunfire tore through a vehicle in a shocking daylight attack that has left residents and visitors rattled.
At approximately 5:51 p.m., a Denali SUV parked near the hotel was struck by an estimated 30 rounds fired at close range. Witnesses described a chaotic moment as shots rang out in rapid succession, sending bystanders running for cover and guests inside the hotel diving to the ground.
The driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old male, miraculously escaped with only a graze wound to the hip, according to Philadelphia police. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. His identity has not been publicly released, but authorities confirmed he is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel called the incident “a brazen act of violence with no regard for public safety.” He added, “This happened during rush hour in one of the city’s busiest corridors. It’s pure luck that we aren’t reporting a loss of life today.”
According to initial reports, the assailant or assailants approached the SUV and opened fire from close proximity using what police believe may have been semi-automatic handguns or rifles. Investigators recovered dozens of shell casings at the scene and are working to determine the exact number of shooters involved. Surveillance footage from the hotel and surrounding businesses is currently being reviewed.
Police have not yet confirmed a motive, but sources familiar with the case suggest the shooting appears to be targeted, rather than random. The victim was alone in the vehicle at the time of the attack and has no known ties to the hotel or any of its patrons. Investigators are looking into the possibility of prior disputes or ongoing conflicts that may have led to the shooting.
No arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s tip line.
Witnesses Describe Chaos
Guests and employees at the Courtyard by Marriott described a scene of confusion and fear as the shots rang out.
“It sounded like fireworks at first, but then we realized what it really was,” said one hotel employee who asked not to be named. “People were screaming and running. It felt like something out of a movie.”
Others recalled hearing the gunfire echo through the corridor as traffic came to a standstill. “There was a guy slumped over in the SUV, and the windows were just shattered,” said a witness who had been dining nearby. “It’s insane that this could happen right in front of a hotel with families and kids around.”
Crime and Public Safety Concerns Mount
The shooting is the latest in a string of high-profile violent incidents that have raised concerns about gun violence and public safety across Philadelphia. While overall violent crime has seen fluctuations, targeted shootings and daytime attacks have continued to plague parts of the city, including commercial and residential areas previously seen as relatively safe.
City Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr., who represents the area, issued a statement Tuesday evening, saying:
“We cannot allow our neighborhoods and commercial districts to become battlegrounds. We must work together — community members, law enforcement, and policymakers — to put an end to this senseless violence.”
Investigation Ongoing
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group is leading the case, supported by federal partners and forensic teams. They are examining ballistic evidence, analyzing digital surveillance footage, and interviewing potential witnesses in the area.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether the shooting is connected to gang activity, drug trafficking, or personal retaliation, but they stress that no stone will be left unturned as they pursue those responsible.
Public Appeal
Police are urging anyone with video footage, including dashcam recordings from passing vehicles, or firsthand knowledge of the shooting to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the PPD tip line or by calling 215-686-TIPS.
As the investigation continues, the Courtyard by Marriott remains open, though with heightened security. Hotel management has pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement and provide any support necessary to help identify the perpetrators.
In the meantime, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of yet another senseless burst of violence — this one in broad daylight, outside a busy hotel, on a street where children, families, and commuters walk every day. For many, it’s a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustained efforts to curb gun violence in Philadelphia.
