POWELL, Ohio — Community Mourns the Heartbreaking Loss of Alexander Teshome, Cherished Olentangy Liberty High School Student
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Olentangy community mourns the tragic passing of Alexander Teshome, a beloved student at Olentangy Liberty High School, whose life ended far too soon. The news of his untimely death has left the school, his friends, family, and the entire Powell area in a state of shock and sorrow, grappling with the unimaginable loss of a young man who brought light, warmth, and inspiration to everyone he met.
Alexander, affectionately known as “Alex” to those closest to him, was a vibrant and kind-hearted soul, remembered for his infectious smile, quiet strength, and the compassion he showed to those around him. He was a junior at Olentangy Liberty, where he was known not only for his academic excellence but also for his involvement in school life, leadership roles, and his genuine kindness that made a difference in the lives of students and teachers alike.
“Alex had a heart of gold,” said Liberty High School Principal Greg Mahoney. “He was the kind of student who made you proud to be an educator — respectful, thoughtful, and full of promise. His absence is already deeply felt in our halls.”
Friends and classmates describe Alex as someone who made everyone feel seen and valued. Whether it was helping a fellow student with homework, offering words of encouragement before a big test, or simply listening when someone needed a friend, he showed a rare maturity and empathy well beyond his years.
“He had a way of making you feel like everything was going to be okay, no matter what you were going through,” said his friend Jordan McBride. “He was calm, funny in the best way, and incredibly smart. We were all lucky to know him.”
Alex was also a proud member of several extracurricular activities, including the student leadership council and the school’s debate and robotics teams. Teachers and coaches often spoke of his natural curiosity, strong work ethic, and respectful demeanor.
Outside the classroom, Alex had a wide range of interests. He loved music, was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing video games and spending time with his family. His parents describe him as a loving son, a protective older brother, and a bright light in their lives.
“He was our joy,” said his mother through tears. “We were so proud of the young man he was becoming. It’s hard to understand how someone so full of life and love could be gone.”
In response to the loss, the Olentangy Local School District has mobilized grief counselors and support services for students and staff, recognizing the profound emotional impact Alexander’s death has had on the school community.
“This is a time for unity, for leaning on one another, and for remembering the incredible young person Alexander was,” Superintendent Todd Meyer said in a statement. “We are committed to supporting our students, staff, and families through this difficult time.”
A candlelight vigil is planned to take place on the football field at Olentangy Liberty High School this coming weekend. Classmates, teachers, and community members will gather to honor Alexander’s life, share memories, and find solace in each other’s presence. The school has also designated a remembrance wall in the main hallway, where students are encouraged to leave messages, drawings, and tributes in his memory.
In the coming days, a scholarship fund is being established in Alexander’s name to support college-bound students who exemplify the same compassion, integrity, and academic dedication he was known for. More details about the fund and how to contribute will be shared by the school district and the Teshome family.
Alexander Teshome’s life, though brief, left an indelible mark on those around him. He will be remembered not just for what he accomplished in his young life, but for how he made people feel — valued, loved, and seen.
As the Olentangy community grieves, they also celebrate the life of a young man who exemplified the very best in humanity. Alexander’s spirit lives on in the lives he touched, the friendships he forged, and the love he left behind.
In this time of sorrow, may we carry forward the kindness, humility, and strength that defined him. Rest in peace, Alexander — your light will never be forgotten.
