Derailed Train Prompts Overnight Closure of I-110 in Baton Rouge Near Governor’s Mansion Curve
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced a full closure of both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 110 near the Governor’s Mansion curve beginning tonight, Thursday, May 30, 2025. The closure is required to facilitate the removal of a derailed train from a railroad bridge that runs above the interstate.
The closure will begin at 7:00 p.m. and affect I-110 in both directions between Capitol Access Road and North 22nd Street. DOTD officials said the operation is necessary to ensure the safety of the traveling public and work crews during the train removal process.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during the closure and to plan ahead for potential delays in the downtown and mid-city Baton Rouge areas. DOTD encourages drivers to use I-10 and surface streets, where detour signs will be posted to guide traffic around the closure zone.
Local law enforcement and traffic crews will be on-site to assist with traffic control and ensure the work is completed as efficiently and safely as possible. The timeline for reopening the interstate will depend on the complexity of the removal operation and potential safety concerns arising during the process.
At this time, details regarding the cause of the derailment and whether any hazardous materials were involved have not been released. No injuries related to the derailment have been reported.
DOTD has not provided an exact timeframe for when I-110 will reopen but said updates will be shared with the public as soon as they are available. Travelers are encouraged to monitor DOTD’s social media pages, 511la.org, or local news outlets for real-time traffic information and updates regarding the closure.
For emergency travel needs during the closure, drivers are reminded to follow posted detours and use caution in all work zones.
