Traffic Crash Involving Chevy Malibu and Michigan State Police Patrol Vehicle Under Investigation
June 1, 2025 | Detroit, MI
A routine traffic assist turned into a multi-vehicle crash on Sunday evening, June 1st, 2025, after a Michigan State Police (MSP) patrol vehicle was struck while stopped on the roadside. The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of North Lodge and Monterey Avenue, drawing swift response from law enforcement and sparking renewed attention to roadside safety.
The Detroit Regional Communications Center began receiving 911 calls reporting a disabled Ford Fusion obstructing the left lane of traffic. The vehicle, driven by a 65-year-old Detroit man, had reportedly run out of gas and was left idle in a hazardous position along the roadway.
A Metro South trooper was dispatched to the scene and arrived promptly to investigate and assist the stranded driver. As the trooper stood outside his patrol car speaking with the motorist, he heard the sudden screech of tires—an ominous warning of what was to come.
Moments later, a 23-year-old female driver from Farmington Hills, operating a Chevrolet Malibu, lost control of her vehicle. She collided with the front passenger side of the stationary MSP patrol vehicle before crashing into the rear of the disabled Ford Fusion.
The impact of the crash left visible damage to both the patrol car and the Ford Fusion. Fortunately, the trooper sustained only minor cuts to his left hand and declined medical treatment at the scene. No other injuries were reported by those involved.
Following an investigation at the scene, citations were issued to both civilian drivers. The 65-year-old driver of the Ford Fusion was cited for Impeding Traffic due to leaving his vehicle stopped in an active lane without adequate warning or hazard signals. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old driver of the Malibu was cited for Improper Lane Use, reflecting her failure to maintain control of her vehicle and avoid the collision.
Michigan State Police have reiterated the dangers posed to first responders and stranded motorists during such roadside encounters. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution when approaching any vehicles stopped on the roadway, particularly in high-speed or multi-lane areas.
In a statement following the crash, MSP officials emphasized the importance of the state’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over when passing emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or any vehicles with flashing hazard lights on the shoulder.
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed. The crash remains under administrative review by MSP, and further assessments may determine if additional actions or safety recommendations will be issued.
Drivers are urged to remain alert, reduce distractions, and always ensure vehicles are moved safely off the road whenever possible in the event of a breakdown or emergency.
