EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) — A devastating tragedy unfolded early Sunday morning in rural Shelby County, Illinois, when four young men lost their lives in a horrific collision between a car and a train. The Illinois State Police confirmed that the accident occurred around 4:20 a.m. on County Road 400 North, when the vehicle the men were traveling in ran through a stop sign and bypassed the gates at a railroad crossing, fatally striking an oncoming train.

The train did not derail, but the impact was catastrophic. All four occupants in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims have been identified as:
