The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the body discovered on the Hwy 231 Bridge has been identified as 39-year-old David Merrit, a resident of Arab. This tragic development follows the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
In connection with this case, 55-year-old Daniel Ray Shelton, also from Arab, has been arrested and charged with Murder. Shelton’s arrest marks a major step forward in what has been a complex and active investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
On Saturday, Morgan County S.W.A.T. officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Seagrove Road in Lacey’s Spring. This operation was conducted as part of the broader investigation into the incident. At the time of the search warrant execution, Shelton was not present at the residence. However, law enforcement successfully located and apprehended Shelton earlier today.
This investigation has involved extensive cooperation between several agencies, including the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Huntsville Police Department, Arab Police Department, and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies have worked collaboratively to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and carry out coordinated operations to bring clarity and justice to this case.
Sheriff’s Office investigators continue to follow leads and pursue all avenues to ensure a thorough and comprehensive inquiry into David Merrit’s death. The community’s assistance remains invaluable, and officials encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward to support the investigation.
