Fatal Motorcycle Crash on I-96 Claims Life of 30-Year-Old Detroit Man, Michigan State Police Say
DETROIT, MI – June 6, 2025 — The Michigan State Police are investigating a tragic motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a 30-year-old Detroit man late Friday night. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. on the westbound I-96 Express Freeway near Evergreen Road, prompting a swift response from emergency services and a sobering reminder about motorcycle safety as the riding season intensifies.
According to a statement from the Detroit Regional Communications Center, multiple 911 calls were received reporting a motorcycle down in the area. Witnesses indicated the bike was on the left shoulder of the westbound lanes, but the rider was not immediately visible. In a distressing twist, additional calls reported a person motionless on the eastbound I-96 Express Freeway, across several lanes from where the motorcycle had come to rest.
Trooper 2, Michigan State Police’s aerial unit, arrived overhead and confirmed the presence of a motionless individual lying in the eastbound lanes. Ground troopers quickly arrived and located the rider — a 30-year-old male — who had been ejected from the motorcycle and was discovered unresponsive. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist had been traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the I-96 express lanes when he lost control of the motorcycle near Evergreen Road. The bike struck the left-side concrete barrier, resulting in the rider being violently ejected across the median into oncoming eastbound traffic lanes. Fortunately, no additional vehicles were involved, and no further injuries were reported.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending family notification.
Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing the importance of caution and responsibility during motorcycle season:
“As we begin motorcycle season, this crash serves as a reminder that motorcycle operators need to follow all traffic laws. If you operate a motorcycle, be sure to wear protective gear, have the proper endorsement, and drive safely.”
This incident highlights the deadly risks of high-speed riding, especially on high-traffic freeways. As warmer months draw more motorcyclists to Michigan roads, law enforcement officials urge riders to exercise heightened caution, always wear protective helmets and gear, and ensure that they are trained, endorsed, and mentally prepared for the unique challenges of motorcycle travel.
The crash caused temporary lane closures and traffic delays in both directions while the scene was cleared and investigators collected evidence. Michigan State Police continue to review surveillance footage and witness statements as part of their ongoing investigation.
The loss of this young man has sent ripples through the Detroit community and the broader network of Michigan riders. Authorities hope that this tragedy will raise awareness and prompt all motorists—particularly those operating motorcycles—to prioritize safety, preparation, and lawful operation.
If you or someone you know rides a motorcycle, Michigan State Police encourage participation in certified safety courses offered through the Michigan Department of State, and a renewed commitment to protective riding practices.
