Remembering Sgt. Aaron Cox: East Texas Soldier Killed in Training Accident in Hungary

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — The United States Army and the community of Mabank, Texas are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Sgt. Aaron Cox, a dedicated and courageous soldier who was tragically killed in a training accident near Camp Croft, Hungary on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

Sgt. Cox, 24, was a proud member of the “Strike” 2nd Brigade Combat Team, part of the esteemed 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His life was cut short during a vehicle accident while he and his fellow soldiers were preparing for Exercise Saber Guardian 25, a multinational military training operation aimed at enhancing cooperation and readiness among NATO allies and partners.

According to military officials, Sgt. Cox succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident. Details surrounding the incident remain under investigation, but the Army has confirmed that it occurred during routine mission planning and logistical movements for the upcoming joint exercise.

Born and raised in Mabank, Texas, Aaron was known among his family, friends, and fellow soldiers as someone who embodied discipline, loyalty, and service. His quiet strength, unwavering commitment to his duty, and his respect for both his country and his comrades earned him admiration across the ranks. He had enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduating high school, driven by a desire to protect, serve, and be a part of something greater than himself.

Aaron’s loss is being felt far beyond the borders of Hungary or even his unit. His hometown of Mabank is grieving the loss of one of its own—a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His parents, siblings, and loved ones are now facing unimaginable sorrow, remembering Aaron as a beloved son, brother, and friend with a kind heart and an enduring sense of purpose.

Leaders from the 101st Airborne Division issued a statement honoring Cox’s memory:

“Sgt. Aaron Cox was an exceptional soldier and leader whose dedication to the mission and his fellow soldiers exemplified the finest values of the U.S. Army. His loss is deeply felt by the Strike Brigade and all of Fort Campbell. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and the Mabank community.”

As the Army continues to prepare for Exercise Saber Guardian 25, Cox’s sacrifice stands as a somber reminder of the risks our service members face—even during peacetime training—and the extraordinary courage they exhibit every day.

Plans for a memorial service are currently underway, and Sgt. Cox’s remains will be returned to Texas with full military honors. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve, but welcomes messages of support and remembrance.

In honor of his legacy, a memorial fund is being established to support veterans and active-duty soldiers, reflecting Aaron’s passion for camaraderie and care for his fellow service members.

Rest in peace, Sgt. Aaron Cox. Your bravery, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. You stood for freedom, and now your memory stands as a symbol of valor and selflessness. May your journey onward be peaceful, and your legacy eternal.
