Saginaw Double Shooting Leaves One Critically Injured: Community on Edge After Late-Night Violence

SAGINAW, MI — A violent and terrifying incident shook Saginaw’s Southeast Side late Friday night, June 6, 2025, as police responded to a double shooting in the 1100 block of Pennsburg Place that left a young man in critical condition and a woman injured. The disturbing act of gun violence, which occurred around 11:30 p.m., is now the focus of an active investigation by the Saginaw Police Department.

According to reports first published by MLive, officers arrived at the scene to find two victims—an 18-year-old male and a 20-year-old female—both suffering from gunshot wounds. The young man sustained a life-threatening injury, having been shot in the back of the head, with the bullet lodging in his brain. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition under intensive care.

The female victim suffered a gunshot wound to her buttocks, a less serious injury, though still physically and emotionally traumatic. She was also transported to the hospital and is expected to recover. Both victims’ names have not been publicly released.

A Night of Chaos and Uncertainty

Neighbors who heard the gunfire described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking. Several reported hearing a rapid succession of shots, followed by the sounds of screaming. Some residents, fearing for their safety, stayed inside and called 911 while others rushed to help.

“It’s terrifying. This is not something we’re used to seeing on this block,” said one Pennsburg Place resident who wished to remain anonymous. “These are kids—barely adults. Now one is fighting for his life.”

By the time emergency personnel arrived, both victims had already collapsed. First responders provided immediate aid before rushing the pair to the hospital. The surrounding area was cordoned off, and police remained on-site into the early morning hours gathering evidence, marking shell casings, and speaking with witnesses.

An Active and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not announced any arrests or publicly identified suspects in the case. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“We are asking members of the community who saw anything or may have surveillance footage to reach out,” said a spokesperson for the Saginaw Police Department. “What happened Friday night is devastating. We want justice for the victims and answers for their families.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245). Tipsters can remain anonymous.

Community Reaction: “It’s Got to Stop”

This shooting adds to growing concerns about youth violence and gun crime in Saginaw, a city that has made strides in reducing violence in recent years but continues to grapple with flare-ups that leave residents shaken.

Local activists and city officials have voiced renewed calls for action following this most recent tragedy.

“This shouldn’t be normal,” said Rev. Lionel Hines of the East Side Neighborhood Coalition. “Two young people were gunned down on our streets. One may never speak again. We have to invest in our youth, in our neighborhoods, and stop this cycle before more families are broken.”

A small vigil is being planned for the victims by community members who are hoping to rally against the surge in violence. Organizers say they want to provide support to the victims’ families and call attention to the trauma affecting the entire community.

Holding Onto Hope

As of Monday, June 9, the 18-year-old male victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, surrounded by family and monitored closely by medical staff. Loved ones have asked for privacy but are asking the community to lift him in prayer. A crowdfunding effort may be launched in the coming days to help with his medical expenses and rehabilitation, should he survive his injuries.

The 20-year-old woman, though physically stable, is also receiving trauma counseling, having witnessed and experienced the horrors of the shooting firsthand.

This tragic incident marks another reminder of the fragility of life and the need for continued efforts to address gun violence, particularly among youth. For now, Saginaw mourns, waits for answers, and prays for healing in the face of another senseless act of brutality.
