It is with deep sorrow that the community mourns the loss of John McNally, cherished physical education teacher at Ithaca City School District and dedicated assistant coach for Ithaca College’s iconic Bomber baseball program. A pillar of commitment, strength, and mentorship, John’s impact transcended the gymnasium and dugout—shaping countless lives along the way.

A Life Dedicated to Education & Athletics

John began his remarkable tenure with Ithaca College athletics in 1996, initially serving as a student assistant coach. He graduated in 1999 with a degree in health and physical education, already demonstrating his lifelong dedication to both learning and athleticism  . After completing his studies, he transitioned into a permanent role as assistant coach, where he became the steady force behind the Bombers’ defensive excellence—coaching outfielders and guiding players at first base for nearly three decades .

Simultaneously, as a beloved PE teacher within the Ithaca City School District (ICSD), John fostered a positive and inclusive environment for young learners. At ICSD, located at 400 Lake Street in Ithaca, NY  , he championed physical wellness and instilled lifelong values like teamwork, perseverance, and self-confidence.

Impact on Student-Athletes

During his extended run with Ithaca College, John became synonymous with the Bombers. His steadfast presence in the dugout—first as an enthusiastic student coach, then as an experienced assistant—helped sustain the team’s competitive spirit and continuity. Colleagues and players alike recall John’s calming influence, technical guidance, and unwavering encouragement.
