West Hartford Hit-and-Run Tragedy: John Marczak Identified as Victim; Suspect Juan Pablo Novoa Arrested

WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – A tragic incident that occurred earlier this month in West Hartford has shaken the local community and left a family grieving. Authorities have now publicly identified the victim in a fatal hit-and-run crash as 44-year-old John Marczak, a resident of Plainville. Marczak tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.

The incident took place during the early morning hours near the intersection of New Britain Avenue and Shield Street, an area known for both pedestrian traffic and challenging visibility in low light. According to police, officers responded to reports of a person lying in the roadway and discovered Marczak critically injured. Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene, but despite their best efforts, Marczak was pronounced dead.

Following a thorough investigation led by the West Hartford Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team, 22-year-old Juan Pablo Novoa, of Cromwell, was arrested in connection with the hit-and-run. Authorities allege that Novoa was driving the vehicle that struck Marczak and then fled the scene without rendering aid or calling for assistance. Surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and community tips led detectives to identify Novoa’s vehicle, which they later located with damage consistent with the crash.

Novoa has been charged with evading responsibility resulting in death, a felony in the state of Connecticut, and additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues. He is currently being held on bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court.

News of Marczak’s death has devastated his family, friends, and the wider Plainville community. Known for his quiet strength, kind nature, and generosity, John was a loving son, devoted friend, and reliable coworker who leaves behind a legacy of compassion and warmth. His sudden and senseless passing has sparked an outpouring of support and grief, with neighbors and loved ones remembering him as someone who would “give you the shirt off his back.”

“We are heartbroken,” said a family spokesperson. “John was a good man who didn’t deserve this. We’re thankful to the police for their persistence in finding the person responsible. Now, we just want justice and space to grieve.”

Community leaders have called for increased traffic safety awareness and better protections for pedestrians in West Hartford. In response to the fatal crash, town officials have discussed reviewing lighting, signage, and traffic-calming measures along New Britain Avenue, where several recent traffic incidents have raised public concern.

A candlelight vigil honoring John Marczak’s memory will be held this weekend near the site of the incident. Friends, coworkers, and residents are invited to come together in remembrance and solidarity.

As the case proceeds through the legal system, Marczak’s family has asked for privacy and prayers. Meanwhile, many in West Hartford are left reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of accountability and responsibility behind the wheel.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact the West Hartford Police Department at (860) 523-5203.

Rest in peace, John Marczak. Your memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
