🚨 Severe Thunderstorms Trigger Power Outages in Florissant and Black Jack, St. Louis County 🚨

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — June 17, 2025 — Residents of Florissant, Black Jack, and surrounding areas in St. Louis County are facing severe weather conditions as a powerful thunderstorm system swept through the region Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing heavy rain, intense lightning, and widespread power outages.

Torrential Rain and Fierce Winds Unleash Havoc

Starting around 3:00 p.m., dark storm clouds rapidly rolled in across the area, unleashing a torrent of rain that reduced visibility and flooded some low-lying streets. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Florissant, Black Jack, and neighboring communities, cautioning residents about the potential for damaging wind gusts, hail, and dangerous lightning strikes.

Alongside the downpour, gusts of wind exceeding 50 mph battered trees and power lines, resulting in numerous reports of fallen branches and debris blocking local roadways. The ferocity of the winds also caused structural damage to roofs, awnings, and fences in several neighborhoods.

Widespread Power Outages Affect Thousands

One of the most significant impacts of the storm has been the widespread power outages affecting thousands of homes and businesses across Florissant and Black Jack. Ameren Missouri, the primary electric utility provider for the area, confirmed that approximately 12,000 customers were without electricity as of early evening.

Spokesperson Lisa Carter said, “Our crews are actively responding to multiple outage locations across St. Louis County. The safety of our workers and the public is our top priority as we work to restore power as quickly as possible. We expect full restoration to take several hours, depending on weather conditions.”

Emergency Services on High Alert

Local emergency services, including the Florissant and Black Jack fire departments, have been on high alert throughout the storm. Fire Chief Robert Martinez advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel while the storm is active.

“There are risks of downed power lines, flooding, and hazardous driving conditions,” Chief Martinez said. “If you see a downed line, assume it is live and immediately call 911. Please keep emergency lanes clear for responders.”

Several emergency calls have been reported for minor injuries caused by falling tree limbs and vehicle accidents on slick roads, but no major injuries or fatalities have been confirmed.

Community Response and Preparedness

Residents shared images and videos of the storm’s intensity on social media, with many documenting flooded streets, lightning strikes, and darkened neighborhoods. Some community centers and local churches have opened their doors as warming and charging stations for those without power, offering shelter and refreshments.

Local officials are reminding residents to:

  • Charge cell phones and keep flashlights and batteries handy
  • Avoid driving through flooded areas
  • Keep away from downed power lines and report them immediately
  • Prepare for possible extended power outages by having water, non-perishable food, and medications ready

Weather Forecast and Safety Outlook

According to the National Weather Service, the severe thunderstorms are expected to continue sporadically into the evening, gradually moving eastward. A flash flood watch remains in effect for parts of St. Louis County until midnight.

Meteorologist Sarah Kim warned, “This storm system is capable of producing further strong wind gusts and localized heavy rainfall, which could worsen flooding in vulnerable areas. Residents should stay tuned to local weather updates and heed any emergency advisories.”

As the community weathers this severe weather event, emergency crews remain committed to restoring power and ensuring public safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, check on neighbors—especially the elderly and those with special needs—and report any hazards promptly.
