ST. LOUIS — 16-Year-Old Octavius “Tay” Harris Identified in Deadly Downtown Triple Shooting

ST. LOUIS — A community is in mourning, and a family is shattered, following a devastating triple shooting that unfolded early Sunday morning in downtown St. Louis. The violence erupted near North Ninth and O’Fallon streets, just north of The Dome at America’s Center, and claimed the life of a young teenager: 16-year-old Octavius Harris, affectionately known as “Tay.”

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred in the early hours of the morning as a group of teens rode through the area. Investigators now believe the victims may have been chased and ambushed while inside a vehicle, though the full sequence of events is still under investigation.

Tragically, Tay did not survive the shooting. Two other teenagers — both friends of Tay — were also struck by gunfire and sustained injuries. Authorities report that they are expected to recover physically, but the emotional scars will likely last a lifetime.

Adding to the heartbreak, Tay’s twin sister was reportedly with him during the incident but escaped without injury. Family members say she is now grieving the loss of her brother — her other half — in a way that only a twin can understand.

A Bright Light Taken Too Soon

Tay’s family described him as a fun-loving, kind-hearted teen who loved music, fashion, and spending time with his siblings and friends. “He had a smile that could light up a room,” said a cousin, who asked not to be named. “He was full of energy, full of life. He didn’t deserve this.”

As news of the tragedy spread, an outpouring of love and grief flooded social media. Friends and classmates posted memories, photos, and tributes using hashtags like #LongLiveTay and #JusticeForOctavius, calling for peace and accountability in a city increasingly plagued by youth gun violence.

A Growing Crisis: Youth and Gun Violence

City officials and community leaders are expressing grave concern as this latest incident adds to a growing list of shootings involving teenagers across St. Louis.

“The fact that we are seeing more and more young people either being shot or pulling the trigger is alarming and unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for the mayor’s office. “We have to ask ourselves hard questions — about access to guns, about supervision, about what kind of futures we are offering our youth.”

Preliminary reports suggest the group of teens involved in Sunday’s shooting ranged in age from 16 to 18 years old. Police are still working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or a result of escalating conflicts between youth groups.

Officials have not disclosed any arrests in the case as of Tuesday, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward, noting that community cooperation is vital in bringing Tay’s killer to justice.

Calls for Accountability and Change

While officials stated that no criminal charges are currently being considered against parents, they did acknowledge that parental accountability and systemic intervention are part of ongoing discussions.

“We’re not just talking about a tragic death here. We’re talking about the breakdown of safety nets,” said a representative from the Department of Public Safety. “These are kids. They should be home, safe, planning their futures — not dodging bullets at 1 a.m.”

Community advocates say the tragedy underscores the need for increased investment in youth services, nighttime outreach, conflict resolution programs, and mental health support. Some have called for the expansion of late-night teen safe spaces and curfew enforcement in high-risk areas.

Remembering Tay: A Legacy of Love

As police continue their investigation, Tay’s family is preparing to lay him to rest. Funeral arrangements are currently underway, and loved ones have launched a memorial fundraiser to help cover expenses and provide support to his grieving siblings — including his twin sister, whose life has been forever changed.

“Tay’s story is not just a statistic,” said a family friend. “He was a son, a brother, a friend, a twin. His life mattered.”

The pain of his loss is being felt across St. Louis, where residents are once again left wondering how many more young lives must be lost before change takes hold.

On behalf of The New Real STL News, we offer our deepest condolences to the Harris family and all who knew and loved Tay. Let us continue to hold his memory close and work together to prevent another family from enduring such a senseless tragedy.

May his name be spoken with love, and may his legacy be one that inspires peace.

Rest in Power, Octavius “Tay” Harris.
