Michigan Couple Tragically Killed in Lawn Mower Collision — Community Heartbroken
Birch Run Township, MI – A devastating accident late Friday night has left a Michigan community grieving the heartbreaking loss of a young couple. Shelby (34) and Mitchell (32), loving partners and devoted parents, tragically lost their lives after their lawn mower was struck by a vehicle in Birch Run Township.
Around 10:15 p.m., the couple was crossing Gera Road near Birch Run Road on a riding lawn mower when they were hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The collision threw both Shelby and Mitchell from the mower with such force that emergency responders, who arrived quickly, were unable to save them. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old man from Mt. Morris, was not injured and remained at the scene. Authorities say he is cooperating fully with the investigation. At this time, no signs of impairment have been reported, and the incident remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.
A Devastating Loss
The sudden loss of Shelby and Mitchell has left Birch Run and the surrounding community in shock. The couple was widely known and loved—described by friends and neighbors as kind, generous, and deeply devoted to their family. They shared a beautiful bond rooted in love and partnership, and they poured their hearts into raising their children and building a life together.
“They were more than just neighbors—they were friends to everyone,” said a nearby resident. “Always waving, always smiling. The love they had for each other and their boys was so real, so strong.”
Two Children Left Without Their Parents
Most devastating of all, the crash leaves behind two young boys who must now grow up without their mom and dad. The couple’s lives revolved around their children, and the heartbreak of their absence is being felt far and wide.
Family friends and members of the community have begun organizing support efforts, including a fundraiser to help provide for the boys’ future, including grief counseling and everyday needs.
A Sobering Reminder
This tragedy serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers present on rural roadways, especially at night. While it may seem safe to cross quiet roads on riding mowers in small communities, low visibility and fast-moving traffic can make such moments deadly. Local officials are urging drivers and residents alike to use heightened caution and awareness on rural roads.
Honoring Shelby and Mitchell
As Birch Run mourns this devastating loss, plans are underway for a candlelight vigil to be held near the crash site in the coming days. The community is coming together to grieve, remember, and stand in support of the couple’s children and loved ones.
Shelby and Mitchell will be remembered for their unwavering love for one another, the life they built together, and their deep devotion to their family. Their memory will live on in their children, in the stories told by those who knew them best, and in the legacy of love and togetherness they leave behind.
Rest in Peace, Shelby and Mitchell.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
