Omaha Police Investigate Deadly Double Shooting Near 30th and Larimore; One Man Killed, Woman Injured

OMAHA, NE — A somber Sunday morning in Omaha began with violence, as police responded to a deadly double shooting in the early hours of June 22. The Omaha Police Department (OPD) is now actively investigating the incident, which claimed the life of one man and left a woman injured.

According to officials, officers were dispatched just before 4 a.m. after multiple ShotSpotter gunfire detection alerts were triggered in the vicinity of North 30th Street and Larimore Avenue, a residential area in north Omaha. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

The male victim, identified as 28-year-old Mandrell Swiney Jr., was found with life-threatening injuries. He was quickly transported to Nebraska Medicine, but despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Family members have since been notified, and grief is spreading among loved ones who describe Swiney as a young man with a big heart and a close bond to his community.

Also injured in the shooting was 35-year-old Kimesha Legon, who sustained a gunshot wound that police say is non-life-threatening. She was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital, where she is currently recovering. Authorities have not released further details about her condition or whether she has been able to speak with investigators.

At this stage, no suspects have been publicly identified, and police have not commented on a possible motive. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and detectives are working to piece together exactly what led to the gunfire.

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have surveillance footage from the area to come forward.

“We are asking anyone who saw or heard anything unusual near 30th and Larimore early this morning to reach out. Even the smallest piece of information can be critical,” said an OPD spokesperson.

Members of the public with any information are encouraged to contact the OPD Homicide Unit at (402) 444-5656. Those who wish to remain anonymous can provide tips through Crime Stoppers at (402) 444-STOP (7867).

As the city wakes up to yet another tragedy involving gun violence, community leaders are once again calling for peace and collaboration with law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and prevent further bloodshed. Vigils and community gatherings are expected to be organized in the coming days to honor the life of Mandrell Swiney Jr. and support those affected by the violence.

This shooting marks yet another act of senseless violence in Omaha, adding to a growing list of tragedies that continue to impact families and neighborhoods alike. Police are determined to find answers—and justice—but they are calling on the public to help make that possible.
