Josiyah Derrick, 17, Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Eriyn Brionne White at Fort Wayne Park

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A late-night party at Tillman Park turned into a tragic crime scene on Monday, June 23, when 20-year-old Eriyn Brionne White was fatally shot and another individual was critically injured. The alleged shooter, 17-year-old Josiyah Derrick, is now in custody after reportedly confessing to the killing on social media just hours after the incident.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were dispatched to the southeast-side park shortly before midnight following multiple reports of gunfire during a large gathering. When they arrived, they found White with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts. A second victim, whose identity has not been released, was also found critically wounded and remains hospitalized in grave condition.

In a shocking development, authorities say that Josiyah Derrick made an apparent confession on social media shortly after the shooting. The post, which circulated widely online, referenced the event at Tillman Park and admitted involvement in the shooting. Investigators quickly tracked Derrick down, and he was arrested without incident.

Derrick is facing preliminary charges of murder and unlawful possession of a handgun, as Indiana law prohibits individuals under 18 from possessing firearms. The Allen County Prosecutor’s Office stated that additional charges could be added as the investigation continues and more evidence is analyzed.

Eriyn Brionne White was described by friends and family as a kind, driven young man with big dreams. He had recently begun training for a career in HVAC repair and was focused on building a positive future. His sudden and violent death has left his loved ones devastated.

“He was always the one to uplift everyone,” said one friend. “To lose him like this, in a place where he should’ve been safe, is just heartbreaking.”

Residents near Tillman Park say they are deeply disturbed by the violence and are calling for more resources to address the growing issue of youth gun violence in the city. The park, often used for family outings and community events, now stands as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be lost.
