Tragic Chain of Violence in Fort Wayne Leaves Two Dead, Police Seek Public’s Help
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A Thursday afternoon turned deadly in southeast Fort Wayne as a tragic sequence of violence unfolded, leaving two people dead and a community shaken. Authorities say a woman, desperately trying to escape a volatile altercation with a man, lost her life in a heartbreaking incident near Weisser Park.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the woman—whose identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification—was involved in a heated argument with a man just before 2:30 p.m. Witnesses say the confrontation grew increasingly hostile near the intersection of McKinnie Avenue and Weisser Park Avenue. Fearing for her safety, the woman attempted to flee the scene in her vehicle.
But moments after she drove away, gunfire rang out.
Investigators believe the man fired shots at the woman’s vehicle as she tried to escape. One of the bullets struck her, causing her to lose control of the car. Her vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into the side of a nearby home. Emergency personnel responded swiftly, but tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that her injuries were consistent with both the crash and a gunshot wound.
Then, in a startling twist, the man who allegedly opened fire on her was himself shot and killed just moments later.
Police say a second shooter emerged and fatally shot the male suspect at the scene. The identity of this individual—and their motive—remains a mystery. Investigators are now working to determine whether the second shooter was a bystander reacting to the initial violence, someone known to either victim, or a third party with a separate motive.
Fort Wayne Police Department officials have expressed urgency in solving the case and are appealing directly to the public for assistance.
“We believe there are people in the community who know what happened,” said FWPD spokesperson Sgt. Jeremy Webb. “We’re asking anyone with information—no matter how small it may seem—to come forward. Justice for the victim and her family depends on it.”
The intersection near Weisser Park was cordoned off for several hours as crime scene investigators combed the area for evidence. Detectives collected shell casings, reviewed surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, and interviewed witnesses. Residents in the area say they are heartbroken and deeply disturbed by the violence, describing the scene as chaotic and traumatic.
“I heard the shots, then the crash, and then more shots,” said one neighbor, who asked not to be named. “I ran outside and saw the car smashed into the house. It was just awful.”
