Meridian’s 11th Homicide Victim of 2025 Identified as 26-Year-Old Tavis Brown
MERIDIAN, MISS. — June 27, 2025 — The Meridian Police Department has confirmed the identity of the city’s 11th homicide victim of the year as Tavis Brown, a 26-year-old man who tragically lost his life following a shooting late this week.
The fatal incident occurred near the intersection of 27th Avenue and 21st Street, an area just west of downtown, shortly after gunfire erupted in the neighborhood. Brown was struck by bullets during the shooting, along with another individual who was also wounded but survived. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, but Brown succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to the hospital.
The second victim, whose identity has not been publicly released, is currently receiving treatment for injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
A City Shaken by Gun Violence
Brown’s death marks Meridian’s 11th homicide of 2025, a figure that underscores growing concerns in the community regarding violent crime. Residents nearby reported hearing multiple gunshots and described scenes of chaos as first responders arrived and taped off the area.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said one local resident who asked to remain anonymous. “I didn’t know Tavis personally, but I’ve seen him around. No one deserves to lose their life like this.”
The crime scene was processed by Meridian Police Department detectives and forensic units. Officers canvassed the neighborhood, speaking to residents and collecting surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes. Detectives believe this was a targeted attack, but have not confirmed whether Brown was the intended victim.

While the investigation is ongoing, loved ones have begun to speak out about Brown’s life and untimely death. Friends describe him as quiet, respectful, and trying to find a better path for himself.
“He had dreams just like anyone else,” said one relative. “He was someone’s brother, someone’s cousin, someone’s friend. He didn’t deserve this.”
