DETROIT — One Dead, Three Injured in Shooting Near Detroit Park and High School
DETROIT — A quiet Friday evening in Detroit was shattered by gunfire as a shooting near a park and high school left one person dead and three others injured, according to law enforcement sources. The incident occurred in the area of Duchess Street and Morang Avenue, near Skinner Playfield and Denby High School on the city’s east side.
Authorities responded to the scene around dusk after multiple 911 calls reported shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were rushed to a local hospital, where they are currently being treated for their injuries. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. It is not known at this time what led to the violence, and no suspect descriptions have been made available. Police have not confirmed whether the victims were targeted or caught in crossfire, and it is not yet clear if the shooting took place during an organized event at the park or nearby school.
Skinner Playfield, which often sees families and youth gathered for sports and community events, was quickly cordoned off by investigators. Denby High School, located just steps away from the scene, is not believed to be directly involved, though the close proximity to a school campus has heightened community concern.
Detroit Police, along with crime scene investigators, canvassed the area late into the night. Evidence markers littered the street as officers collected shell casings and interviewed potential witnesses.
Local residents expressed shock and heartbreak over the shooting, with many calling for increased police presence and community engagement to curb escalating violence in the area.
“This is devastating. This is where our kids play, where families gather,” one nearby resident told 7 News Detroit. “We need peace in our neighborhoods, not more gunfire.”
Detroit Police are urging anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, and any relevant video footage from home surveillance cameras in the area may prove helpful to the investigation.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the shooting remains under active investigation.
