MILWAUKEE SHOOTING SUSPECT IN CUSTODY: TWO POLICE OFFICERS INJURED IN LINE OF DUTY
MILWAUKEE, WI — June 27, 2025 — A 22-year-old man, Tremaine Jones, has been arrested and charged in connection with a violent ambush-style shooting that left two Milwaukee police officers injured late Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on June 26, in an alley near North 24th Place, where officers were responding to a report of a person with a weapon. What began as a routine call quickly escalated into a life-threatening confrontation.
Ambush in the Alley
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, as officers approached the alley to investigate, gunfire erupted suddenly. It was an ambush, police say — an attack on officers who were simply performing their duties.
One of the responding officers, 32-year-old Officer Kendall Corder, was critically wounded in the hail of bullets and was immediately transported to Froedtert Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, fighting for his life. A second officer, 29, was also injured in the attack but is listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.
The shooting sparked a large-scale manhunt that quickly led to the identification and arrest of Tremaine Jones, who was taken into custody without further incident.
A Repeat Offender
This is not Jones’ first encounter with law enforcement. In 2021, he faced charges for:
- Riding in a stolen vehicle
- Resisting or obstructing police
However, rather than face trial, Jones was granted a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA), which allowed him to avoid incarceration by completing community service and paying restitution. That agreement was successfully completed, and his case was dismissed just two months ago.
Critics of deferred prosecution programs are now questioning whether leniency in past cases may have played a role in emboldening repeat offenders like Jones.
Department & Community Response
The shooting has rattled both the department and the Milwaukee community. In a statement, the Milwaukee Police Department condemned the attack:
“This was an unprovoked and senseless act of violence. Our officers put their lives on the line every day, and this ambush is a stark reminder of the dangers they face. We will hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
The Milwaukee Police Association echoed those sentiments:
“We stand with Officer Corder and his family during this unimaginably difficult time. We’re grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, and we will not rest until justice is served.”
Mayor’s Statement
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson addressed the public following the incident:
“This is a sad and infuriating moment for our city. No police officer should ever be targeted for simply doing their job. I urge the suspect—and anyone who would follow in his footsteps—to understand: our police department is committed, our justice system is watching, and we will find you. You will be brought to justice.”
Next Steps in the Case
Tremaine Jones is currently being held in custody as investigators continue building their case. Charges are expected to include:
- Attempted First-Degree Intentional Homicide of a Law Enforcement Officer
- Reckless Injury
- Use of a Dangerous Weapon
Formal charges are expected to be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
A Community in Mourning, A Department United
This tragedy marks yet another grim chapter in the rising violence affecting law enforcement across the country. Officer Kendall Corder’s condition remains critical, and fellow officers are asking for prayers and support as he continues to fight for his life.
A GoFundMe page and community vigil are being organized by members of the local Fraternal Order of Police to support Officer Corder’s recovery and his family during this time.
