MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A senseless act of violence at one of Myrtle Beach’s most iconic restaurants has left a family mourning and a community reeling. Grayson Meyers has been identified as the victim who was fatally shot on the night of Friday, June 27, during an altercation inside Peaches Corner, a historic restaurant that has served generations of locals and tourists since 1937.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department confirmed Meyers’ identity Saturday morning, as the investigation into the fatal shooting continues. A second individual — an innocent bystander crossing the street near 9th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard — was also injured in the gunfire, but is expected to recover after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to law enforcement, the incident began as a verbal altercation between Meyers and Evany McCray, a 17-year-old employee of Peaches Corner. The confrontation quickly escalated, and McCray allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and opened fire inside the crowded restaurant. Grayson Meyers was struck by the gunfire and later pronounced dead at the scene, despite efforts by emergency responders.

In a shocking turn, Evany McCray of Conway, S.C., is being charged as an adult in connection with the deadly incident. Charges against McCray include:

  • Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature
  • Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime
  • Possession of a Weapon by a Person Under 18

McCray was taken into custody shortly after the incident and remains held while prosecutors and investigators determine the next steps. Law enforcement officials have not yet disclosed the motive behind the altercation or what, if any, prior relationship existed between Meyers and the suspect.

Peaches Corner, a landmark in the heart of Myrtle Beach’s entertainment district, was immediately closed following the shooting. Known for its nostalgic diner atmosphere and family-friendly environment, the restaurant has rarely seen such violence in its long history. Patrons and nearby residents expressed disbelief and sorrow over the incident, calling it a dark moment in a place so rooted in local tradition.

Grayson Meyers, remembered by friends and family as a warm and caring individual, was described as someone who had a passion for life and a gift for connecting with people. Tributes are already beginning to flood social media, as loved ones attempt to process the sudden and brutal nature of his passing.

“We’re devastated,” one family friend wrote online. “Grayson didn’t deserve this. He was a beautiful soul, always smiling and making others laugh. He had so much more life to live.”

Authorities are continuing to interview witnesses, review surveillance footage, and piece together what led to the tragic events inside the restaurant that night. The investigation remains active, and officials are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

As the community of Myrtle Beach grapples with the tragedy, many are left wondering how such violence could erupt in such a public and cherished space — and how to prevent it from happening again.

A memorial for Grayson Meyers is expected to be organized in the coming days. In the meantime, the city mourns a life lost too soon and braces for a difficult legal process ahead.
