Carson, Washington – It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we mourn the tragic and untimely passing of Natalie Hoffberger, a bright and compassionate 17-year-old high school senior who lost her life after a devastating fall while hiking at Falls Creek Falls near Carson, Washington.
Natalie was more than just a student at Nelson High School—she was a friend, a role model, and a radiant spirit whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Described by teachers and classmates alike as thoughtful, caring, and mature beyond her years, Natalie was the kind of young woman who brought light into every room she entered. Her death has shaken not only her family and friends, but the entire Nelson High community and the greater Portland area, where she was deeply loved and admired.
The incident occurred during a recreational hike—something Natalie greatly enjoyed. A lover of the outdoors and nature’s beauty, she was drawn to places like Falls Creek Falls for their peace and serenity. That such a tragic accident happened in one of her favorite settings has made this loss all the more heartbreaking for those who knew her.
Nelson High School Principal Greg Harris spoke on behalf of the entire school community, stating:
“We are devastated by the loss of Natalie Hoffberger. She was a remarkable young woman—humble, generous, and full of promise. Her absence is felt deeply within our school community, and we are grieving alongside her family and friends. Natalie made a difference here, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all of us who had the privilege to know her.”
In addition to her academic dedication, Natalie was involved in school activities and community volunteer work. She was known for checking in on others, lifting up those who felt unseen, and quietly leading by example. Her empathy and grace touched lives in both big and small ways.
Counseling services and grief support have been made available at Nelson High School, where students and staff are working through the emotional toll of Natalie’s loss. Vigils, memorials, and moments of silence have already begun to take place, each one a testament to the tremendous impact she had in her 17 years.
A public memorial service is being planned to honor Natalie’s life and spirit, with details to be announced soon by the Hoffberger family. In the meantime, friends, classmates, and well-wishers are encouraged to share memories, photos, and messages of love as a way to celebrate Natalie’s life.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Hoffberger family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of support they’ve received. They ask for continued prayers, space to grieve, and for Natalie to be remembered not just for how she died—but for how she lived: with compassion, curiosity, and a heart full of love.

Forever 17. Forever loved.
May her adventurous spirit soar on, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
