CRIME INSIDER UPDATE: Arrests Made in Mechanicsville Shooting Incident

Hanover County, VA — July 1, 2025 — The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has announced significant developments in the ongoing investigation into a June 24, 2025, shooting that occurred in the 7500 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike in Old Mechanicsville. What began as a chaotic and alarming event has now resulted in multiple arrests, thanks to swift law enforcement action and vital community cooperation.

At approximately 8:23 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the scene following reports of a violent altercation involving a firearm. Upon arrival, law enforcement found the scene deserted, as all individuals involved had fled. The gravity of the situation quickly became clear as investigators pieced together what had taken place through witness interviews and surveillance footage.

The evidence revealed that four males, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were involved in a physical altercation. During the struggle, one individual struck another in the head with a firearm, resulting in the accidental discharge of the weapon. The firearm-related injury and reckless behavior triggered an immediate and intensive investigation.

After several days of exhaustive detective work, three juveniles and one adult male were identified and taken into custody for their roles in the incident. Due to their ages, the juvenile suspects’ identities remain confidential. All three were transported to Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center and face multiple charges related to the assault of a 19-year-old male victim.

The adult suspect, Brandon Lee Drake, age 18, of Ashland, Virginia, was arrested on June 27, 2025. He faces a list of serious charges, including:

  • Attempted Malicious Wounding
  • Assault by Mob
  • Using a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
  • Brandishing a Firearm

In addition, during his arrest, Drake was found to be in possession of illegal items and was further charged with:

  • Reckless Driving
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance

Drake remains in custody at the Pamunkey Regional Jail as the investigation continues. All individuals arrested have been confirmed as residents of Ashland, Virginia.
