First Victim Identified in Deadly Chicago Nightclub Mass Shooting: Remembering Avi Drexler

CHICAGO, IL — The city of Chicago is reeling after a devastating mass shooting outside Artis Lounge, a popular nightclub in the city’s River North neighborhood, that claimed four lives and left 14 others injured late Wednesday night. Authorities have now publicly identified the first victim as Avi Drexler, a young man remembered by family and friends as brilliant, kind-hearted, and full of life.

The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. outside the club on West Chicago Avenue, where a crowd had gathered to celebrate the album release party of rapper Mello Buckzz. The night, which was supposed to be filled with music, celebration, and joy, descended into chaos when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up to the curb. Witnesses say someone inside opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd before speeding away, leaving behind a scene of bloodshed and panic.

A Young Life Lost Too Soon

Avi Drexler, whose age and background have not yet been fully released by officials, was among those caught in the hail of bullets. He died at the scene, despite immediate efforts by bystanders and first responders to render aid. Those who knew Avi describe him as someone who lit up every room he entered, a person with big dreams and an even bigger heart.

“Avi was one of those rare people who brought people together,” a close friend shared. “He didn’t deserve to be taken from us like this. No one did.”

According to family members, Avi was deeply connected to the community, and had attended the event to support friends and enjoy the celebration — not knowing it would be his last night alive.

Chaos in the Crowd

The gunfire sent hundreds of people fleeing in terror. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people screaming, ducking behind cars, and running for cover as shots rang out.

“It happened so fast,” one partygoer said. “One second we were vibing to the music, and the next, everyone was screaming and hitting the ground.”

In total, 18 people were struck by gunfire — four of them fatally. Several others remain hospitalized, with at least two in critical condition. Police have yet to release the identities of the additional victims, pending notification of their families.

The shooter or shooters remain at large, and Chicago Police are continuing to review surveillance footage from the scene and nearby businesses in hopes of tracking the vehicle and identifying suspects. Authorities believe the attack was targeted but indiscriminate in execution, striking people both directly involved and innocent bystanders alike.

A City Demands Answers

Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a statement Thursday morning, calling the shooting a “gut-wrenching tragedy” and pledging the full support of the city’s resources to bring those responsible to justice.

“We cannot become numb to this,” the mayor said. “Another celebration has turned into a crime scene. Another family is left broken. This has to end.”

Community leaders, activists, and grieving families gathered for a candlelight vigil Thursday night outside the Artis Lounge, laying flowers, lighting candles, and demanding action. “Justice for Avi” was written on homemade signs and shouted by those who came to mourn — and to stand against the violence that has become far too familiar in parts of the city.

A Legacy of Light in the Face of Darkness

As friends and loved ones grapple with the horror of Avi’s loss, they are choosing to remember him not for the way he died, but for the way he lived — with heart, humor, and a fierce dedication to the people around him. Plans are underway for a public memorial, and a fundraiser has been launched to support his grieving family and honor his memory.

“There’s nothing that can make this right,” one relative said. “But if we can save even one more life by speaking out and demanding change, Avi’s death won’t be in vain.”
