NORTHPORT, AL — The city of Northport is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating act of violence that claimed the life of 28-year-old Jermaine Witherspoon, who was shot and killed while sitting inside a car on July 2, 2025. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Joyce Reed, is now in custody, facing capital murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting.
The incident unfolded in a typically quiet neighborhood, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving loved ones mourning the untimely and senseless loss of a young man whose life was taken far too soon.
What We Know So Far
Authorities say the fatal encounter stemmed from a heated argument between Witherspoon and Reed. At some point during the confrontation, Reed reportedly produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, striking Jermaine as he sat in the driver’s seat. Emergency services were dispatched quickly, but Jermaine Witherspoon was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have confirmed that Jermaine was unarmed at the time of the shooting. The vehicle showed no signs of any attempted escape or defense, suggesting the young man was caught off guard by the sudden and deadly escalation.
The precise details of the argument have not been disclosed, and while police confirmed that the two individuals were acquaintances, the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear at this time.
Suspect in Custody
Joyce Reed was arrested without incident shortly after the shooting and has since been formally charged with capital murder. She is currently being held without bond at the Tuscaloosa County Jail as the investigation continues.
Capital murder charges in Alabama typically apply when the killing occurs under particularly egregious circumstances — including a murder that occurs inside a vehicle or where the victim is defenseless — and may carry the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
A Life Cut Short
Jermaine Witherspoon is being remembered as a young man full of promise, laughter, and love. Family members describe him as someone who was deeply loyal, funny, and known for his calm demeanor and big heart. He had dreams of starting his own business, and though his life was not without challenges, those close to him say he was committed to bettering himself and helping those around him.
“Jermaine had a gentle soul,” one cousin shared. “He wasn’t a troublemaker. He stayed to himself mostly and took care of his people. He didn’t deserve to go out like this.”
Friends and neighbors have begun leaving candles, flowers, and handwritten notes at the scene of the shooting. An online fundraiser has also been started to assist his family with funeral costs and to help care for his younger siblings, whom he often supported.
Community in Shock
The sudden act of violence has left many in Northport stunned. Residents in the area say they were shocked to learn that something so tragic had occurred just feet from their homes.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said one neighbor. “We heard sirens and saw the police, but we never expected to hear that a young man had been killed right here. It’s something you never get used to.”
Community advocates are calling for more resources around conflict resolution, mental health, and gun violence prevention, urging that more must be done to address tensions before they escalate into irreversible tragedies.
Investigation Ongoing
The Northport Police Department and Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit continue to investigate the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities are asking anyone with additional information — especially those who may have seen or heard the argument — to come forward.
