Indianapolis, IN – A shooting that left two individuals injured has led to the arrest of a man now facing multiple serious charges, including Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) confirmed the arrest of John Ellis-Strayhorn following a tense response to the incident in the 4000 block of Meadows Way.
Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving calls about gunfire just before sundown. Upon arrival, officers found a chaotic scene. One victim was suffering from injuries consistent with multiple gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to a local hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. A second victim was found with a graze wound and, despite offers for medical treatment, declined transport.
Eyewitnesses told investigators that the suspect was seen fleeing the scene and entering a nearby apartment complex. Law enforcement quickly contained the area and began a search for the suspect. With the help of tactical units and continued investigation, police located and apprehended John Ellis-Strayhorn without further incident.
Following his arrest, Ellis-Strayhorn was preliminarily charged with:
- Attempted Murder
- Aggravated Battery
- Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon
In addition to these charges, Ellis-Strayhorn was wanted on a federal warrant for escape, further complicating his legal situation and elevating the severity of his case. Authorities did not provide details regarding the nature of the federal escape warrant but noted that it will be handled in coordination with federal law enforcement agencies.
Detectives with IMPD are continuing to investigate the motive behind the shooting and are working to determine whether Ellis-Strayhorn knew the victims prior to the altercation. At this stage, it remains unclear what led to the violent outburst.
“This is yet another example of how quickly gun violence can erupt in our communities and the dangers it presents,” an IMPD spokesperson said. “We are thankful that the officers were able to act swiftly and that no additional people were injured during the search and apprehension of the suspect.”
Community members in the area expressed concern and sadness following the incident. Several residents said the neighborhood, while not without its troubles, rarely sees such violent outbursts in broad daylight.
The investigation remains active, and anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
Ellis-Strayhorn is currently being held in the Marion County Jail, and formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days as prosecutors review the case. His court date has not yet been announced.
As Indianapolis continues to grapple with gun violence, local officials are again calling for community engagement, stronger gun laws, and better mental health and conflict resolution resources. The incident on Meadows Way serves as another reminder of the urgency of those conversations.
