In Loving Memory of Richard Carani Beloved Patriarch, Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and Faithful Servant 1938 – 2025

With deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Carani, 86, a cherished and respected figure in Lake County, Illinois, who departed this life on July 8th at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. A man of unwavering faith, quiet strength, sharp wit, and deep compassion, Richard’s legacy is one of dedication—to his family, his community, his country, and his faith.

Richard’s remarkable journey began in Chicago, born to Paul and Rose Carani, and rooted in strong Italian-American values of hard work, love, and resilience. He was raised in a close-knit, faith-filled family, attending Our Lady of the Angels grade school and graduating from the esteemed St. Ignatius College Prep, where the seeds of lifelong discipline, character, and commitment to service were planted.

During his young adult years, Richard proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. While stationed away from home, he exchanged heartfelt love letters with the woman who would become the love of his life—his bride and lifelong partner. Their love story, filled with patience, loyalty, and devotion, became the foundation for a life shared in joy and perseverance.

Upon returning from military service, Richard began building both his family and his career. Starting in the grocery business, he managed several Jewel Food Stores in Chicago’s western suburbs, quickly becoming known for his integrity, leadership, and relentless work ethic. But it was in the mid-1970s, with a pioneering spirit and a vision for more, that Richard relocated his family to Libertyville to embark on a new venture: business ownership. There, he founded Richard’s Villa Market in Lake Villa and Richard’s Prime Meats in Lindenhurst—beloved local establishments that served the community with quality and care. His commitment to excellence and personal relationships made his businesses not just stores, but cornerstones of the neighborhoods they served.

Later in life, Richard transitioned to the trucking industry, where he continued to work with diligence and pride. He concluded his professional career with Shure Microphone, bringing his signature dependability and warmth to every role he took on.

Beyond his work, Richard was deeply committed to faith and service. A 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, he embodied the organization’s values of charity, unity, and fraternity. His involvement in faith-based service was not only a personal calling—it was a guiding light for others. In recognition of his decades-long dedication, Richard was honored in 2018 as an inductee into the Libertyville Citizen Hall of Fame, a testament to the impact he made through his selflessness and devotion to community.

Richard was a man of gentle humor and quick wit, often bringing laughter and light into the lives of those around him. He had a deep intellectual curiosity, particularly in World War II history, and was a passionate trivia enthusiast, always eager to share a fact or a clever anecdote. His love for music was profound and ever-present—a soundtrack that mirrored his thoughtful, reflective soul.

But above all, Richard was a family man. He found his greatest joy in the company of his loved ones—his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He especially cherished the family’s camping trips to the mountains and the peaceful solace of their time in Minocqua, Wisconsin—a place he lovingly referred to as his “healing place.” There, he would gaze over the water, listening to the haunting, beautiful call of the loons, reflecting on life’s blessings with deep serenity.

For over 25 years, Richard faced Parkinson’s disease with quiet bravery and unshakable grace. Despite the challenges, he never lost his warmth, his sense of humor, or his deep capacity for love. He continued to express his most heartfelt wish for “peace on earth,” a reflection of the inner peace he carried and extended to everyone around him.

Richard Carani is survived by the large and loving family he built and cherished—his wife, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—each of whom carry forward his values, his legacy, and his love. His presence in their lives was a gift, his memory a blessing, and his example a compass that will guide them always.

As the Carani family and the greater Lake County community mourn this tremendous loss, they also celebrate a life that touched so many, uplifted all, and left the world better than it was before.

May Richard Carani rest in eternal peace, his spirit forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
