Battle Creek, MI – July 9, 2025 — A tragic shooting in the early morning hours has left a 31-year-old man dead and a neighborhood shaken. The Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) is actively investigating the fatal incident, which occurred in the 100 block of South 22nd Street.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, BCPD officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire in the quiet residential area. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a critical gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel rendered aid on site before transporting the man to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
According to police, the victim and suspect knew each other, and the shooting appears to have stemmed from a heated personal dispute involving a third party. While full details have not yet been disclosed, investigators believe the argument escalated rapidly and led to the deadly violence.
The BCPD Investigations Bureau worked swiftly to identify a 36-year-old male suspect. Detectives located him at a separate residence later in the morning. After being interviewed by investigators, the suspect was arrested and booked into the Calhoun County Jail on an open murder charge.
“This was not a random act of violence,” said a spokesperson for the BCPD. “We believe this was an isolated dispute between individuals who knew each other, and there is no ongoing threat to the general public.”
