El Paso, TX – The Fort Bliss community is mourning following the heartbreaking loss of a service member, and military leaders are expressing deep sorrow and unwavering support for the grieving family. In a solemn statement, Brigadier General Rory Crooks, deputy commanding general of the 1st Armored Division, offered heartfelt condolences on behalf of the command and the larger Fort Bliss family.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief following this devastating loss,” said Brig. Gen. Rory Crooks. “The entire Fort Bliss community extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We are coordinating closely with local authorities and are providing full support to the family under these tragic circumstances.”
While official details surrounding the incident have not yet been publicly disclosed, Fort Bliss officials confirmed that they are working in tandem with local authorities to investigate the circumstances thoroughly and respectfully. The identity of the fallen service member has not been released as family notifications are still underway.
In his statement, Brig. Gen. Crooks emphasized the close-knit nature of the Fort Bliss community and the shared sense of grief that follows such a loss. As a leader, he underscored the Army’s commitment not only to mission readiness but also to compassion and care for its people—especially in the darkest of times.
“No matter how strong we train to be, nothing prepares us for the sudden loss of one of our own,” Crooks added. “This individual was more than just a soldier—they were a teammate, a friend, and a loved one. We are heartbroken.”
Standing Strong as One
Located in El Paso, Fort Bliss is one of the largest military installations in the country and home to thousands of service members and families. The loss has sent ripples across the installation, where soldiers serve not only side by side, but as an extended family.
The 1st Armored Division leadership, alongside chaplains, behavioral health teams, and Family Readiness Groups, have mobilized to provide grief counseling, unit support, and direct assistance to the next of kin.
“We are a team, a family,” said Brig. Gen. Rory Crooks. “When one of us suffers, we all do. That’s why our commitment to supporting this family—emotionally, spiritually, and logistically—is absolute.”
Community members have already begun expressing their sympathies and solidarity, with many taking to social media to honor the memory of the fallen and offer their support.
Looking Ahead
While investigations continue, Fort Bliss leadership is also preparing to honor the fallen in a manner that reflects the values of duty, integrity, and service that define military life. A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days.
“In the Army, we stand by each other—in life and in loss,” Brig. Gen. Crooks concluded. “We will continue to walk with this family through their grief, and we will remember and honor their loved one’s life and service with the dignity they deserve.”
As the Fort Bliss community faces this painful moment together, the words of Brigadier General Rory Crooks serve as both a tribute and a call to unity: to support one another, to grieve as one, and to honor the memory of a life lost far too soon.
