Dallas, TX – July 9, 2025 — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday morning in the Old East Dallas neighborhood. The incident unfolded shortly after dawn on Fairview Avenue, sparking a swift response from the Dallas Police Department and prompting a multi-agency investigation now underway.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple reports of a man armed with a knife who was attempting to kick down the door of a residence. The calls came in just after 7:00 a.m., with concerned neighbors alerting 911 to the escalating situation.
When officers arrived on scene, they encountered a man visibly agitated and holding a knife. Body-worn camera footage, which has not yet been publicly released, reportedly shows officers issuing repeated verbal commands instructing the man to drop the weapon and step away from the property. Witnesses in the area say they heard officers attempting to deescalate the situation.
Despite their efforts, the suspect continued to advance toward the officers, refusing to comply with their commands. Police attempted to subdue him using less-than-lethal force, including a Taser, but the tactics were reportedly ineffective. As the man came closer while still armed, at least one officer discharged their weapon, striking him.
Officers immediately rendered first aid and began CPR at the scene while awaiting emergency medical services. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
As of Wednesday evening, the man’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities have confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident.
The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit is leading the inquiry into the shooting, alongside the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and Internal Affairs, in accordance with departmental policy for officer-involved shootings.
Fairview Avenue, a residential street typically quiet during early morning hours, was blocked off for several hours as crime scene investigators processed the location. Neighbors described a heavy police presence and a tense, unfolding scene that left many shaken.
“It was terrifying,” said local resident Sharon Ellis, who lives just a few houses down from where the incident occurred. “You never expect to wake up to police sirens and something like this happening right outside your window.”
The incident raises ongoing questions about law enforcement’s use of force, mental health responses, and public safety protocols in high-risk situations. City officials have stated that additional details, including body camera footage, may be released to the public in the coming days, once preliminary reviews are completed.
The name of the officer who fired the fatal shot has not been made public. Per standard procedure, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Community leaders are urging patience and transparency as the investigation unfolds, while also expressing concern for all lives affected by the tragic encounter.
