Fullerton, NE – A heartbreaking incident has left the Fullerton community in mourning after a reported drowning occurred Thursday afternoon, July 10, 2025, at Power House Park along the Cedar River.
The Nance County Sheriff’s Office, working in coordination with the Fullerton Volunteer Fire Department and Fullerton Volunteer Rescue Squad, responded swiftly to a distress call reporting a drowning near the park’s low head dam. According to witness accounts, two teenage girls were swimming in the Cedar River when one of them, a 15-year-old female, was pulled beneath the water’s surface by the powerful current.
Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and quickly initiated a rescue operation. The victim was located downstream of the dam, caught in the dangerous and turbulent waters created by the hydraulic forces at the base of the structure. First responders immediately began life-saving efforts, including administering CPR on-site before the teen was rushed by ambulance to Merrick County Medical Center.
Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel and medical staff, the young girl was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Out of respect for the family and in accordance with department policy, the identity of the victim will not be released for at least 24 hours.
“This is a tragic and devastating event for our community,” said Sheriff Bakewell. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the young victim. Our hearts are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
Sheriff Bakewell also took a moment to publicly commend the professionalism, quick response, and teamwork demonstrated by the Fullerton Volunteer Fire Department, the Volunteer Rescue Squad, and all involved first responders. “Their swift actions under extremely difficult conditions reflect the courage and commitment of our local emergency teams,” he added.
This tragic incident is a somber reminder of the dangers posed by low head dams, sometimes referred to as “drowning machines” due to their powerful recirculating currents. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to use extreme caution when swimming or recreating near such structures, especially during periods of increased water flow.
An investigation into the drowning is ongoing. Additional information may be released following notification of family and further review.
