Morrow County Deputy Killed in Line of Duty Responding to Domestic Disturbance on Memorial Day

Morrow County, OH – May 27, 2025 — A community is in mourning after a Morrow County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call on Memorial Day—a holiday meant to honor fallen heroes, now marked by the loss of one more.

The deputy, identified Tuesday as 31-year-old Daniel Sherel, was fatally wounded after gunfire erupted upon his arrival at the scene. The suspect involved in the incident was also shot and is currently hospitalized in serious condition. The circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire are still under active investigation by state authorities.

Sherel, a young but seasoned deputy known for his courage and dedication, had served with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office for several years. According to Sheriff John Hinton, Sherel was responding to what appeared to be a standard domestic disturbance call late Monday when the situation suddenly turned deadly.

“He died doing what he was called to do—serve and protect,” Sheriff Hinton said during a solemn press conference on Tuesday morning. “Deputy Sherel was a brave and selfless public servant who risked his life every day for the safety of others. His loss is devastating to our department and to the entire Morrow County community.”

The call came in just after 6 p.m. on May 26. When Sherel arrived at the residence, initial interactions reportedly escalated quickly. Witnesses told investigators they heard shouting followed by multiple gunshots. It remains unclear who fired first, and officials have not yet released information about whether any other individuals were inside the residence at the time.

The suspect’s name has not been made public, but law enforcement has confirmed he sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment at a nearby trauma center under police custody. Charges are expected pending the results of the investigation.

Deputy Daniel Sherel is being remembered not only as a law enforcement officer, but as a husband, son, and friend. Those who knew him describe him as a kind-hearted, calm, and steady presence—a man who found his purpose in protecting others and helping those in need.

“He loved his job, he believed in justice and compassion,” said one fellow deputy who worked closely with Sherel. “He was the kind of guy who could de-escalate almost any situation. The fact that his life was taken while trying to help someone is just heartbreaking.”

Flags throughout Morrow County are flying at half-staff, and a growing memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes has appeared outside the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement agencies across Ohio and beyond have expressed their condolences and solidarity.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement Tuesday, saying:

“Deputy Sherel is a hero in every sense of the word. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Our prayers are with his family, his colleagues, and the community he served with honor.”

An honor procession and funeral services are being planned. Details will be released by the Sheriff’s Office in the coming days.

This tragedy marks a somber reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day, even on holidays meant to recognize sacrifice. Deputy Sherel’s death is a loss not only for Morrow County but for every community that relies on the quiet courage of those who wear the badge.

As the investigation continues, residents are left to grieve the loss of one of their own—a peacekeeper taken far too soon.

Rest in peace, Deputy Daniel Sherel. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
